Livermore, California,
Which 223 magazines are you running for your post 2014 AICS AX chassis? I'm asking because the factory magazine that came with the chassis is different from all the other AICS magazines I've had in the past. There is a small protrusion in the front of the magazine near the top. I did order a couple of Accurate magazines, just wondering if anyone else had noticed this difference.

Does anyone know if AW magazines will work on this chassis?

Thanks in advance.

The difference is... the AX mag is different than the AICS/AT mag. Left is AX and right is AICS/AT.

I will have my 2014+ AX chassis on Monday. I am dropping a 223 Remington SPS in it.
I have AI polymer mags for it and 1 Ruger Precision AI pattern mag and 1 accurate mag to test. I will update you next week.

FYI I had an AI AT chassis with an SPS tac 223 in it. Accurate mags would not feed. I also tried MDT 223 mags.. wouldn't feed either. The only ones that feed are the original AI polymer. Ruger Precision mags weren't available when I did this testing so I can't say about those.

Im hoping it's different with the AX chassis.

My friend has an AT chassis too. But he has a Defiance action and guess what... the Accurate mag feeds.

Beyond me...

Dropped my 223 SPS in the AI AX 2014 chassis. I tested the AI polymer mags that I have with my hand loads and it fed flawlessly. The only gripe is that there is a bit of wobble in it from side to side.

I will get the Ruger RPR 223 mag on Thursday and test as well and my buddy is letting me borrow his Accurate mag. Will post again when I get the results.

There's always a degree of wobble with those plastic mags. I prefer the accurate mags.

That's awesome news Mikey. Thank you very much. I'm just waiting on a few things and then we shall see if it works with a TL3. I need to machine just a little out of the lug pocket. Well It looks like it anyway. But I need some time to do it. Busy with work and kid's soccer tournaments so as soon as I get it done, I'll post results as well.

Thanks

Ruger Precision 223 mags do not feed with my set up. Post 2014 AX/Remington 700

Here's what happens

The feed lips are too far forward and won't allow the head of the case to pop up in front of the bolt.

I decided to sacrifice this mag and Dremel the feed lips back similar to the AI mag. I also dremeled a bit out of the inside of the front of the feed lips after dremeling them back.

IT NOW FEEDS after the modifications

I am the buddy that the Accurate works with the .223 Defiance action. The polymer didn't work.

I have a second Defiance in 6.5 Creedmoor and it likes polymer and not the Accurate mag.

Of course the chassis's are not the same. Thankfully between Mike and I we will cover our bases as we traded mags so all our actions function.

Testing is Saturday.

The new Ruger mags would not work in my CDI bottom metal so I copied your modification and now they feed. Thanks for the pictures!

Okay, I can finally add to the list and answer my own questions. Today, I put my rifle together. Here are the parts as fallows:

Post 2014 AICS AX chassis green
Bighorn TL3 with all 3 bolt heads, Thick tang
Huber trigger
223 Proof barrel pre fit
260 Remington Bartlein
300 WSM Bartlein
AICS 308 mag
Ruger 223 mag
Accurate 223 mag
AICS AX magazine
AW magazine
AX magazine
AI 223 magazines on the way will update

My TL3 is cut for an AW magazine. Upon installation, I could not get s single magazine to latch into the well. After looking at it, I had to remove the pistol grip to install the action and make a small mod just under the bolt handle. Then I re-installed the action and torqued down the action. Not all mags were sitting where they are supposed to. After chambering the 260 and 300WSM, I installed the 223 Proof barrel and loaded some rounds into the mags. All 10 cycled from each magazine. I will try the AI 223 mags as soon as they arrive and update.

I swapped out barrels and bolt heads and tried the other mags. The AW, AX, and AICS AX all fed perfectly. For the 300 WSM, I had to mod the feed lips on the AICS to get it to work, but now feeds well.

So a long story short, I think the TL3 can use any magazine with the AW cut that I have in the post 2014 AX chassis. All the magazines I used fit well in my action/stock combo. All were snug, not loose like my other rifles with a M5 installed. I checked the side to side also and it didn't seem much on my rifle.

Thank you everyone for contributing to this thread. It was very helpful because I needed a plan B If A did not work.

Finally received the AI mags and they work as expected. They have just a little more wobble than the other mags, but I'm not complaining at all.

in case anyone is interested, as far as scope mounts are concerned, for the AX, my 12 year old son fits an S&B 5-25 with a 1.34 inch tall rings. I am using an AI #6936 mount with a 30 degree base. For me, I use a 1.5 inch tall mount, AI #6946 to get the proper cheek to eye relation with the same scope. I have a fat head.

Hope this helps out.

Did you run a barrel nut system with this particular build?

Also, just to clarify, you found that 223's will feed reliably out of the Accurate mag, the ruger mag, and the AI 223 mags? Do all of the 223 magazines stay locked in place with the magazine release lever?

Which magazines were best for the 300WSM cartridge, and how many rounds did they hold using the 300WSM?

When I originally posted my findings, I only ran about 120 rounds through all the magazines I had.

I am running a barrel nut system for all calibers. All the magazines do stay locked but as I run the 223 magazines, only the AI has run perfectly, over 600 rounds. The others after a few hundred rounds, the nose would dive from time to time. This is with my loads, 2.26 COAL using 69grain SMK. Then again, it only happened when my 12 year old son was shooting the rifle. It never happened to me. Maybe he was cycling the bolt too slow or something. There may have been only been 5 or 6 miss feeds and they could have been user/loader fault.

After the problems, I did get rid of the Ruger and Accurate magazines and bought more AI magazines. never had a problem since.

As far as the 300 WSM, I used the standard AICS magazines that were modified. I think the feed lips were opened up a little to handle the round. I had GAP build me a couple of short mags some years back and bought them with 6 extra magazines. They work perfect for the set up now, Bighorn and post 2014 AIAX chassis.

I have a Remington 700 Varmint Synthetic in .223 in a post 2014 AX chassis. This is a "C" series receiver. I'm not sure if the older receiver is responsible for my results, but the AI polymer mags, and the Accurate Mag .223 mags both feed in my rifle. After reading this thread, I bought the AM mag with the intention of installing the insert, spring, and follower in to one of my AX chassis mag bodies. According to my measurements, it looks like it would fit if the binder plate is removed, but I haven't tried it yet, since the AM mag fed and locked up tight.

Has anyone else tried this? If successful, it would yield a steel-bodied AI branded .223 mag with the AX lip.
