I am about to get into precision rifle shooting and need some help from your advanced experience. Should I start with the .223 or the .308? Please keep in mind I already have a colt AR-15 (.223) while steering me in the right direction. Something else to keep in mind, the local range maximun distance is 100yds. Thanks in advance for you help.

Re: .223 or .308 bolt action

first advice is to post this in the bolt action section, the SH information is about the actual workings, rules, problems, with the forum.

.223 will limit you at longer distances compared to the .308.

the .308 you can use for hunting big game if choose to do so.

but, if you are just going to shoot at that 1 range, just accurize the AR you already have.

however in the long run, as a precision rifle setup, the .308 will fit the bill better.

Re: .223 or .308 bolt action

If you plan on staying at that one range, don't plan on taking any game deer or larger, and want to choose between those two calibers- I'd recommend the .223 over .308 for a few reasons.

- with your AR- same ammo (well... kind of. 223 works in a 5.56, but you can't (read: shouldn't due to pressure specs) use 5.56 in 223) Also same dies if you reload (if you don't already, start reloading)
- .223 is cheaper than .308
- At 100 yards, .308 has no real ballistics advantage over the .223.

If you are going to stay at that 100 yard range use the AR you already have. Look for competitions and take it to go shoot at in your area. I sure there are some withing driving distance.

It's really whether you plan to try and find somewhere else to shoot other than your 100 yard range. The range I usually go to only has 100 yards as well. I also have an AR-15 already but went with a .308 round for my precision rifle. I will either join one of the longer ranges which is a 2 hour drive away or shoot at my friends farm which is 4 hours away. If you're willing to try and find something longer than 100 I'd say go with the .308.
