I was planning on shooting the 75 AMAX out of my rifle but have had a hard time finding bulk boxes.
Does anyone have experience with the 80 grain AMAX out of a 8 twist 223 or 223 AI?
I just want to make sure that velocity and stability are not limiting factors.
I figure that 2750 would be be a reasonable velocity estimate.
Thanks

I have shot lots of 80 JLKs and SMKs out of a .223 in 1:8. They worked just fine and I'm sure the 80gr A-Max is no longer than the 80JLK. I think your velocity estimate is good. I get 2850 out of my 26 inch tube on the 80s.

I shoot 75amax's in my 223ai. Krieger, 22", 1-8" at 3050fps. Any faster I start seeing pressure signs. EXTREMELY accurate w/ Lapua brass, 75's, Re-15 and 7.5's. Some guys are running them a little faster than me.

52gr amax and h335 was also impressive.

My experience's mirror what Keith posted above. I started and stopped with the 75Amax, I've never gotten around to trying any of the 80's.

I loved the 50's w/'335 and shot a bunch of them, but I just got to the point where I used 75Amax's for everything from woodchucks to coyotes to deer to steel. I run the 62TSX on deer also.

let us know how you end up MLC!!!!

...also, if the 80Amax was all I could find then I'd run them. I'd imagine the 80 would perform about the same on critters as the 75.....the 75 is pretty wicked.

Is this the same rifle we were chatting about a few month's back, the one where you had an "issue" with the barrel you bought off the classifieds?

Re: 223AI 1/8 twist 75 or 80 AMAX

One and the same.
It is finally in my hands and turned out great.
The barrel is a heavier contour than I'd originally planned but looks better with a suppressor.

I run the 80gr VLD's at 2820 out of a 1/8 22in tube. They are awesome to say the least. I started using them after I ran out of 75gr amax's and with great results. I will go back to the amax as soon as I can find them again as the are about 1/2 the cost. Good luck.

Re: 223AI 1/8 twist 75 or 80 AMAX

I'm pretty happy with the accuracy fireforming brass with the 50 grain Blitz and Benchmark.

Groups at 100, 24.5 25 & 25.5 grains Benchmark:

26 opened up. I was having some operator error and some shots required a second primer strike.
The rifle shoots way better than me.

My AMAX's arrive tomorrow and I have 50 once fired pieces of brass to play with.

First group with 1x fireformed Lapua, CCI BR4's and 25.5 grains of IMR-4064.
4.5 MOA up from 100 yard zero with 50 grain bullets.

I think the 80's might help me with my lack of wind reading.

Re: 223AI 1/8 twist 75 or 80 AMAX

I have two 223AI both shoot the 80 grain Sierra SMK very well. Winchester Brass, Remington 7-1/2 BR primers and lots of N-150. Tried the 80 A-Maxes about a year ago went from 1 hole to one inch.......... sold them. Buddy had a new box of 600 80 A-Maxes and they sucked. Berger 80 grainers shot under one in at two hundred yards and 80 SMK's were 3/4 inch at two hundred.

1/8
Never shot the 75 grain A-max the Hornady 75 grain BTHP can be good. Hornady can make some good bullets and seem to be doing better on quality, we just got two crappy lots of the 80's.............
