I recently got a new Savage Mark II FV-SR .22LR rifle. I am thinking I would use this for plinking and working on precision shooting. Max range I would guess would be 75 to 125 yards...possibly 150 yards for fun.

I would like to know of some scope recommendations based upon the above rifle and range information and the following features:

•Variable power
•Prefer mil-dot or BDC or similar reticle
•Price range $100 to $220

Several that I have looked at include:

•Nikon Prostaff P22 2x7-32 with BDC recticle for .22LR - $180
•Nikon Prostaff 3x9-40 with BDC recticle - $180
•Nikon Prostaff 3x9-40 with rimfire BDC recticle - $150
•Vortex Crossfire 3x9-40 with BDC reticle - $150
•Vortex Crossfire 4x12-40 adjustable objective with BDC reticle - $190
•Sightron S1 3x9-40 with Hunter Hold Over reticle (closeout deal) - $80

Any thoughts on these or recommend others?

Also, with whatever scope you recommend, could you also recommend rings as well? This particular rifle comes with a one piece base already.

I appreciate all your help.

Thanks,

Re: 22LR Scope Help - Variable & Mildot or Similar

I decided to take a leap of faith and have purchased Primary Arms 4-16x40 FFP mil/mil scope and as it has passed the box test both at 50 and 100 yards I have gained more faith in it. Next I will be extending it out to 300 yards and we will see how well it works at extended ranges.

Clarity is pretty nice for the price. Seems to be more crisp than my old Mueller APT which I would highly recommend. The turrets have decent audible clicks. Not the most precise turrets, but you get what you pay for. IMO they are a step above the APT. The variable zoom ring and side focus are very stiff but still workable.

Overall the scope is very impressive for the $229 mark they have set it at. My only complaint is that the eye box is very particular at all settings and gets very tight at 16 power. I thought my Mueller was tight until I received this little scope. On a .22lr it is very easy to work with. For a .308 or anything above .223 I would look elsewhere.

Hope this helps.

Also look at the Weaver Tactical Grand Slam 3-10 from midway not a FFP but seems to be a very good scope if you can afford $300. If not I would highly recommend you look at the Mueller lineup. I have had great success for several years with their products.

Just to let you know. I ran the Mueller on a FV-SR for several years dialing out to 250 with success.

I've had great success with a used 10x Super Sniper on my 22's.
In the ballpark of your price range and plenty of travel to zero and take you past sane 22lr range.

Re: 22LR Scope Help - Variable & Mildot or Similar

Well, i'm much happier with my fixed 10x swfa than with the nearly as expensive variable scope i used before.
I would say in that price range especialy, the quality of the glass is much more important than the "features" like variable power.

With the 10x swfa i can make out .22 bullet holes on white paper at 100m, something I was unable to do with the 24x of the $250 variable i used before. (most of my printed targets have some gray/black, and i cannot make out the bullet holes on that, only when i "miss" and hit the white around it)

Though I can't comment on the models you have listed, maybe some of them combine the features with decent glass quality.
