Any downside to cutting a 24"heavy varmint barrel down to 20" besides the slight loss of velocity? 24" is long and heavy making the gun a bit unwieldy. Mostly a range gun. Maybe some low level 3 gun in the future. It is a Stag Model 6 and shoots very well. I already have the correct diameter JP brake to attach once the barrel is cut. Just want to make sure I am not missing anything before I drop it off at the g.smith.

    THANKS

Just have the work done by a competent smith who will cut the barrel properly, thread it so the threads are concentric to the bore and properly crown it for you. As long as you do that, it shouldn't hurt one bit to go from 24" to 20"
    .

Good question! Will have a standard target type crown and a 1/2x28 thread for the pinned JP brake (I am in CT ... we have to pin). It is a really good shop that I have used many times doing the work. Will post pics!

Hmmm. I've been looking for a 24"-26" 1:8 bull upper for my AR for long distance shooting with 77gn SMK (600-800 yards). Called White Oak Armament and placed an order for a 26" Varmint upper ($630) last week but they have a 5-6 month lead time right now. All the 24" uppers I have seen for sale are going for hundreds more than normal retail right now ($800 and does not include a BCG - what crap)... Should I not be looking at a heavy 24"/26"? I will be using this prone with a bipod. I have a 16" M-forgery Phantom carbine upper now (Fulton Armory) that shoots 69gn well at 400-600 yards and was thinking the extra 200-250 fps would help me reach out a little further... Would have bought another FA upper but they jacked their prices way up too. (Already have a Savage .308 with 24" 1:10 and hitting plates out to 800-900yds is not much challenge...)
