Does anyone shoot 115g DTACs with H4831SC? Looking for a good load to start with as I have a bunch of both and a 243 build on the way.

Hornady 105 gr BTHP
46.5 gr H-1000
Fed 210 LR primer
Brass trimmed 2.040
OAL 2.780 (.005 from lands, Rem 700 1:9.25 twist)
2809 FPS, 26" barrel, chrony 10' from muzzle
Hornady 100 gr BTSP
47 gr H-1000
Fed 210 LR primer
brass trimmed 2.040
OAL 2.698 (.010 from lands, Rem 700 1:9.125 twist)
2907 FPS, 26" barrel, chrony 10' from muzzle
Shot prone, bipod and rear bag
100Y .81" CTC 5 shot group
200Y 1.3" CTC 5 shot group
325Y 2.25" CTC 5 shot group
425Y just under 4" CTC 5 shot group
In comparison to 105 BTHP, the 100 BTSP load by going 100fps faster:
100Y .7" CTC 5 shot group (46 gr of the 105's printed a .81, same as the BTSP)
200Y 1.75" CTC 5 shot group
325Y 2.50" CTC 5 shot group
425Y 3" CTC 5 shot group
At all distances up to 425Y, it appears the 100 BTSP very closely matches within .25” to .75" the performance (drop, POI, POA) of the 105 BTHP Match, and after looking at some more notes, the 105 Amaxes too when the 100 BTSP are pushed 100 FPS faster, and seated back just a little deeper. As far as printing on paper, it is one hell of an accurate hunting bullet out to 425Y - with no real adjustments needed to zeroes, optics, holds or other DOPE.
So even for a less glamorous bullet, it appears the humble 100 gr BTSP is one heck of a bullet, either as a substitute for the more premium heads out to 425Y or standing by itself as "the bullet that could", with better availability than the 105 BTHP & Amax that can be used at shorter to "mid" distances before the higher BCs of the "premiees" starts to be of value.
from the sniper'shide info archive:
100gr BTSP
forum.snipershide.info/showthr...=.243+BTSP+BTHP
105gr BTHP
forum.snipershide.info/showthr...=.243+BTSP+BTHP
100 BTSP VS. 105 BTHP VS. 105 Amax (medium range):
FPS 105 HornadyBTHP H-1000 avg of 5 rounds, 67-70 deg F, 55% hum, +2040 ft sea level chrony 10 ft from muzzle.
45.5 gr 2668fps
46.0 gr 2764fps
46.5 gr 2809fps
47.0 gr 2849fps
105 HornadyAmax H-1000 avg of 5 rounds
45.5 gr 2668fps
46.0 gr 2716fps
46.5 gr 2737fps
47.0 gr 2767fps
Deviation in bullet length (meplat most likely)
10 105 bthp heads avg of 1.220 with .005 in dev. (obviously shorter without plastic tip)
vs.
10 105 amax heads avg of 1.239 with .003 in dev.
The BTHP showed not much of a difference group size out to 425Yards (my longest local range for testing) Vs. the 100 gr BTSP when the 100's are 100fps faster. The 105 BTHP and surprisingly the 100 gr BTSP seemed to do better than the 105 Amaxes out to 425Yards also, at least through my rifle and powder used.

I just tested the 105's & they did shitty no matter the charge so you are right the 1/10 won't stabilize those amax's. I too tested the 87g vmax & got nice 1.5" groups but that was using varget I'll have to try H4350. Thanks for your help.

Can anyone recommend a good starting load for a factory rem 700 26in barrel? I want to use the 105gr amax I'm new to reloading so I'm not sure what powders would work best... I was thinking reloader 19. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ruger American Compact 18" short barrel .243
1:9 twist
Tried IMR4198 & 3031 for the burn rate, and had it on hand.
Remington brass, trimmed to 2.040
Fed 210 primer
Hornday 87gr V-max - I started at 36 gr of 3031, up to 37 grains with 37.5 being max, using a combination of seating depths from .005 to .320 off the lands. An OAL of 2.640” (.032 off the lands) produced 2 five round groups of .75” X 1” at 200 yards at 2900 FPS through an 18” barrel.
A nice smooth reduced load on the 87’s was 29.5 gr of IMR4198, 2.662 OAL, with 1.75” at 200 Yards.
Hornady 100gr BTSP, I started with 33.5 gr of IMR3031 at 2.672 OAL (.005 off lands) which was a nice reduced load and produced a 1.75” x 2.25” 5 shot group at 200 Yards at 2504 FPS.
At 34.5 grains (35gr being max) and an OAL of 2.662” the 100’s produced a 5 shot group just under 1.25” CTC at 2612 FPS – different bullet, again sub MOA at 200 Yards.
Hornady 100gr BTSP with a charge of 34.5 gr of IMR3031, with a 2.632 OAL, or deeper seating of -.045 off the lands that produced a CTC group of .75” wide” x 1.125” high, 2625 FPS at 200 Yards.
The American seems to like deeper seated bullets

Ruger Precision Rifle, factory CHF .243 barrel.
Lapua brass
107SMK
IMR4350 39.7
CCI BR
.010" jam, about 2.810 COAL.
MV 2855, SD 11
This is the low node, and QL predicts 52292psi which is pretty mild. The next node was above SAAMI max pressure (as calculated by QL) but showed no signs of pressure. The elevation difference between the two, at 1000 yards, is calculated at about 4.25MOA, so I opted for the lower node with hopes of increased barrel life.
I used a Forster BR FLS die for the first two loadings of the virgin brass. Fired brass in this chamber shows no measurable movement of the shoulder vs. factory/virgin Lapua brass - it's a true zero headspace chamber. For the third loading, I used a Lee collet neck sizer die with the necks lubed with Imperial graphite, and the accuracy and SD may have improved slightly. I SS tumble the brass, so I lube the bullet with some Imperial graphite before seating. Tension is about .001 with the Lee die, and maybe closer to .002 with the Forster BR FLS.
Rifle has 200 rounds through it, and this load shoots 1/2MOA at 100 and 200 yards (farthest I've tried so far).

Re: 243 Win Loads

I achieved .6 MOA 5 shot groups almost immediately in my RPR with a 105 Berger HVLD, Norma MRP, CCI 250 in Win brass. With a little load tweaking to center the powder charge in the high node along with a primer test and some seating adjustment, I duplicated several five shot groups averaging .5 MOA from a bipod in the prone. I still need to get a velocity measurement with the magneto and do some long range validation, but if this load performs with continued consistency it will work fine.
My load:
105 HVLD .007" off the lands
44.2 grains Norma MRP
CCI250
WW brass, weight sorted with a deburred case mouth and flash hole.
Another load that stacks into tiny groups in my RPR is a load I had leftover from a previous 243 Win. It is a great hog load, and I killed several with it.

42.0 grains RL17

11/15/2016
95 grain Hornady SST
42.0 grains RL17
CCI 250
WW brass
