243 redding bushing size?

Re: 243 redding bushing size?

The way to work it out is seat a bullet that you are going to use into a sized case . Measure the diameter of the neck in the middle of the neck . Then you have very basicly three choices of seating neck tension.
Subtract .001 from that neck diameter and thats the size bushing for light neck tension . hand fed rounds .
Subtract .002 Medium neck tension for general shooting , bolt guns and light to medium weight bullets.
Subtract .003 Higher neck tension for Autos , big calibers , heavy bullets .
This is very general as different situations may call for higher or lower neck tensions. I suggest you buy all three sizes and you have some choices as brass thickness and hardness can vary .

Re: 243 redding bushing size?

Hi we are using a .269 bushing for 243's and 243AI's with Lapua brass so i would start there as we have rifles set up with 9 twists for long range varmint shooting with 105gr A Max's they will also work with a 107 sierra.

Re: 243 redding bushing size?

Thanks for replys guys, with molly Lapua and berger VLD bullets do they tend to give best Long range acuracy with low-med or high neck tension.

Re: 243 redding bushing size?

With lapua brass, redding .271 bushing, no expander ball, neck sizing only, I am getting about .002 neck tension using either coated 115dtacs or 105bergers. I might go .270 if setting up again, but have had great accuracy with thing the way they are now. My fired brass necks measure .2735 , .2695 after being necked and then .2715 with the bullet seated.

Re: 243 redding bushing size?

The thing with neck tension is that you don't want it so high that it puts too much strain on the ogive of the bullet as you seat or pushes the nek / shoulder area back in anyway.
Or reduces the diameter of the bullet by squishing the jacket down .
So best accuracy in a bolt gun is usually the lighter neck tensions not the real heavy neck tensions.
However you have to use the right one for the job taking into consideration , the feeding method , the type of action , the ammount of shank on the bullet , the weight of the bullet etc.
For example you can't have a neck tension so light in an Auto that the bullets move forward when the bolt slams home.
You can have a very light neck tension in a hand fed taget rifle as long as you don't jamb to far into the lands.
Some BR shooters let the lands push the bullet back into the case but I don't like that idea it is dangerous because you could jamb a bullet and it could stay in there if you had to unload.
Cocentricity of the seated bullet is very important to accuracy so the neck tension has to be good enough to resist any tendency for the projectile to come out of alighnment during handling or chambering .

Re: 243 redding bushing size?

Thanks for info guys, With Light neck tension using Lapua brass and 105g molly Lapua-berger Vlds and redding comp neck die do you find best results sizing all or part of the case neck.
