I'm new to building guns. I have a savage 243, and was wondering if anyone ever messed with fixing them up, or if there is anything I can really do to it? It shoots very well now, but know could be better. I just bought a house, so Im saving up to get a better gun to work on but don't know what to get.

What will you be using this rifle for? Hunting, paper punching?
Savages are easy to work on, in fact you can change barrels/calibers in around 10 minutes. The design of the bolthead makes them very accurate out of the box, so with a few inexpensive reloading tools you can work up some nice loads.

The .243 caliber is an excellent long distance cartridge when you get into the heavier grains, but not many stock barrels have a fast enough twist rate for heavier grains.
If you want to shoot long distance with it, for a bit over $300 you can order a top-notch custom barrel. Since its for a savage you can even DIY. Have the barrel made with a faster twist rate than it currently has, something like 1:7, to shoot heavier bullets. Then you can slap on a nice aftermarket stock and all of a sudden you have an amazing rifle.
One of the disadvantages of this is that the barrel life does not last nearly as long as say a 308, but unless you are shooting day in and day out it might not be a bad idea.

Well it was a birthday gift when I turned 16 for hunting. I have used it for hunting every since, but I'm wanting to move up to a bigger cal.. So I'm wanting to use it for the range. What could I do to it to help it out on accuracy, customize the look of it?

Well since you ignored my suggestions of replacing the barrel and stock... why dont you buy few cans of krylon and spray it. That will "customize the look" and i've heard it will do wonders for your accuracy.

I checked a couple of sites after I read your message, so thanks. I found a couple starting out at $289 to about $450.
They all have a 1-8 twist.

have a mission for your gear and stick to it
if it shoots well.....leave it the fuck alone

Trigger Sharp Shooter is the one you want.
leave that rig as is plus a nice trigger
Plan your build wait for good deal like group buys and get the right tool for the job

It's your 16 y/o birthday present, when you look back in 30 years are you more likely to say "Damn I wish I'd messed with how it looks" or instead (and I bet this is it) "hey son/grandson, check this out. Your grandfather gave me this when I turned 16"
I don't F with my 22 or my first MN 91/30 since my dad bought them with me.
