25 SAUM, PRC, WSM etc

Been having an itch to build a 25 cal on a short action would go long action if necessary . Looking for something that can break 3000fps with a 130 class bullet out of a 20-22in barrel.

Is this possible without beating the hell out of the brass? Looking to make a lite weight hunting rifle for shots out to 600 MAX.

Also checked out the SST but brass availability and start up cost are a concern.

Any reasoning behind a PRC rather than anything else? Curious about velocities. Can't find a whole ton on the 25 PRC other than a nice write up by Alex Wheeler.

Had a 25 SAUM, got it up to 3300 fps out of a 24” tube… 131 black jacks, was hell on brass tho. I settled for right at 3200 fps

I would think you could get 3000fps fairly easily out of a 20-22”, but ask the pros around here.

Well, just for context. My 25 Creed match rifle sends 135 Bergers at 3000 from a 25" pipe.
So I'd say anything in that powder column will do it easy.

You could always neck down a 6.5 Sherman Short to 25 as well. I was thinking of that myself…

I built a pair of 25 PRC’s for customers. I preferred the PRC for the Lapua brass. You should hit your target velocity pretty easily.

Did either of them have muzzle brakes? That was my other concern. I've never had a muzzle brake on a barrel that short.

I'm in NY unfortunately. Miss hochal doesn't allow them, under threat of imprisonment.

I’m shooting 133 elite hunters at 3075 with a 22” barrel using h1000. I’m suppressed. Lapua brass

25 wsm pushed a 115 to 3600. It's only a 1:10 twist, so no heavies. (Barrel is on the shelf, it's nearing 20 years old now).

Barrel life, well the throat needed set back at 800 rounds.

I'd have to find the old books, but iirc it was pushing an 87grn varmint bullet over 4000fps.

That barrel had a hard life. Rockchucks were not happy about it either...

Haha I bet they weren't! I'm definitely going to go down the 25cal magnum route. Just have to figure out which one.

Sort of like back in the day when the .264WM came out. Was labeled a barrel burner. No free lunch, want high velocity .. gonna shorten life of barrel. 25cal does sound interesting though. Probably only caliber I don't have .
