Hunting & Fishing .260 deer hunting bullet

Re: .260 deer hunting bullet

It will be my first time hunting with a 260 next year but I will be using either a 130 or 140 berger or the 140 amx, whichever shoots the most consistent. I have had great success with the berger vlds in my 308, all have dropped on the spot but they have all been spine hits so that would be the case with about anything.

Re: .260 deer hunting bullet

140 grain Berger hunting VLD at 2700 FPS out of my Savage. I've gotten 1 whitetail, 2 small hogs(with one shot, they penetrate that much), and a 250 lb ram. All one shot kills.

The 140 VLD's shoot .5 MOA out to 300 for me in an 8" twist barrel, and that's as far as I've shot with them.

I'm going to the 130 grain when these bullets are gone for a little less penetration, and flatter trajectory(not that it matters at my hunting distances).

Re: .260 deer hunting bullet

I researched this and another forum for opinions on a dual purpose (target and deer) round for a .260 (1/8.5 tw) that's currently being put together. I chose to go with the 140 gr Amax.

Re: .260 deer hunting bullet

I would avoid the 6.5 120 ballistic tip. I used them for 2 seasons, and have not been inpressed. I think i will go back the the 125 partion as I don't shoot this gun much over 350 yards.

I've used these to good effect also. Last one I shot I found under the skin (offside shoulder) on my best buck ever. I have had them shed their jackets from time to time though.

I found this bullet and the 120 Nosler BT shot to virtually same point of aim (and average group size) in my rifle, with it's favorite load of Re-19. Recently tried the Barnes 120gr TTSX with the same load, and it shoots even better - though to a different POI. I've had very good luck with TTSX's in my 280, and plan on switching to these permanently in the 260.

Re: .260 deer hunting bullet

I've had good luck with 129gr Hornady Interlocks, 130gr Accubonds and 130gr VLDs, all loaded to about 2870. The Hornadys have given the biggest exit wounds, but I don't have any picture of stuff I've shot with them.

The Accubonds have exited everything I have shot with them except an extremely large boar. I butt shot this one at about 200 yards as he was running away. That stopped him, but he was still up on his front legs and popping his teeth as I approached him, so I put the next one low through both shoulders at about 40 yards. That one did the trick. I recovered the bullet under the gristle shield (which was amazingly thick, nearly an inch) on the far side. This boar measured 60" from the base of the tail to the tip of his snout and 30" from the bottom of his front hoof to the top of his shoulder. A worthy test for ANY bullet...

Also shot this buck last fall with the 130gr Accubond. Broadside shot through both lungs at about 110 yards or so. He ran about 25 yards or so and piled up. Quarter sized exit wound.

I've only shot a Bobcat, a Coyote and one WT buck with the 130gr VLDs, but they work good too. No exit on the WT, but he didn't go far.

I keep searching for the perfect hunting bullet, but from what I've seen, it doesn't really matter. Put 'em in the right spot and stuff dies...

Mind sharing the details? My rifle likes these pretty well, and I'm considering giving them a try on Whitetails.

Mainly no exit hole is my biggest complaint. It was a big 4x4 mulie so you might be ok with a whitetail, but I will try the Sirocco or Accubond next year if I take the 260 again. Good luck.

How far did he run after the hit? Where did you hit him? Good destruction on the inside?

Hit him in the lungs. Went about 40 yards and laid down. Not much destruction on the inside.
