I'm going to purchase a new barrel for my LMT MWS and seek opinions (knowledgeable, preferably) about the advantages of one over the other. I reload, but will have to set up for either caliber. My shooting will be limited to probably 400 yds. Thanks for sharing your experience...

Agreed, but I'll go one step further and say stick with a .223
But if you just want another caliber, I'd say .260 as well.

Good point, PBS. The .260 over the .243, and for 400yd and under, stick with the .308, it's in it element there. Beyond 800yd, my preference would be for the .260.
For 800yd and under, the .308/168, and for 400yd and under, the .308 and 150/155, or .223 and 69gr. For over 800yd, the .308 and 175, but my money's on the .260 and 139-142.

I have been tempted by the .260 MWS barrel from LMT for a while now. Only problem is, I'm not sure it's something I really would benefit from. My 20" SS .308 is serving me just fine for now as my max range in 675yds.
Are the .260 barrels available in any other length than 20"? I have read a little longer is better for the typical .260 setup.

Given your question was 260 or 243....
The first is a necked down .308Win.
The second is a necked down .308Win.
The first is 6.5m/m.
The second is 6m/m.
About the heaviest bullet for the first is 142grain.
For the second; 115.
Excellent 243 brass might be more abundant.
6m/m bullets are less expensive.
Barrel life on the 260 is about twice that of the 243, or more, but that issue really is exaggerated. A barrel cost about as much as 1500 bullets and we buy bullets without thinking too much about it.
If you like compromise and your building a barrel consider 6m/m Rem for similar ballistics as 243Win but greater barrel life due to improved neck shoulder dimensions.

the one thing I like about the 243 is hat I can walk into about any store that has ammunition and 243 will be plentiful. Not so with the 250. Many more options with the 243 but the down side is barrel burning. But, I have to agree with PBS, with the range that you are shooting I would keep it as it is - 308.

I was torn with the 260, 308 and 243 a couple years ago and ended up with the 308 just because it was available at the time... not a really good reason but I wish I had the 260.
