First post, but long time in the shadows.I'd like to work up a load for some target shooting with a Savage Lefty .260 I built. It has a shilen 26" 1-8 twist barrel.I hunt with a stock savage loaded with 140 grn rem PSP'S and 4350 with great results on deer, but now I want to make some small groups with my newest addition.Any starting powder and projo combo's would be appreciated.I know every rifle will have it's own preference in components, but I'd like to start off with some reccomendations that are proven performers.
Thanks,
STEVE

Re: 260 rem target Projo and powder reccomendation ?

I'd start with 142gr Sierra matchkings or 139 gr Lapua scenars
pack it with h4350 powder and light it with a 210m
work up to a velocity of 2800 to 2850 and you should be doing great.

Try out the Hornady 140 AMAX as well with H4350. Excellent bullet.

Yep. I loaded up 600 rds for a buddy's Surgeon/Rock/AICS and used the 142 SMKs and the 140 AMAX over AA-4350, RP brass and 210Ms.

It shot tiny groups.

Throw in the Scenars and you have a perfect trifecta for 1300 yd plinking.

Would you care to share your load, all caveats apply? I have a bunch of 130 VLDs I intend to use for hunting.

I have a bunch of R-17 to try on the 260 that is heading my way. What slugs, what velocity, and accuracy are you getting with the R-17?

I don't mind at all, but I don't know how useful it will be since my load is a little 'different'. This is in a KMW .260 with a 24" Krieger barrel.

LC '72 Match brass, necked down and neck turned
130 Bergers, hBn coated, loaded .030 off the lands
43.5 gr H4350
Fed 210M primer
2935 fps at 85 degrees

Actually this is perfect, my 260 coming in will have 24 inch Krieger, barreled by WmRoscoe. Since waiting for the seller to send me the rifle I prepared different brass from 7-08, and from different 308 brass including the small primer ones, all necked turned prior to necking down. With the intent to do the final neck wall turning once fire formed in the chamber.

Got the powder and 130 VLDs for start. For hunting, my goal is to stretch the 130 as close as I can to the 3K mark, looks like yours is close to it.

Thanks for sharing. Incidently, I have a few hundreds of once fired LC Match '72 that I may play with as well.

I started getting pressure signs just above 3000fps, IIRC. The load I settled on gave the best SD and met my goal of 2900.

Sounds like a plan, just be sure, if you're planning to neck turn again after fireforming, that the necks of your loaded rounds have room to expand and release the bullets on your fireforming loads. William should be able to tell you your neck diameter. I didn't have a 6.5 mandrel for my neck turner, so I ended up fiddling with it until I could neck turn them first, then size them down and end up with the neck thickness I wanted. I've had no problem with it so far, but I do have a bunch of Remington 7-08 and Lapua .243 brass that I'll get around to using some time.

Why handload???

By the way, does anyone have some black hills gold custom load for 260 rem that they want to sell?</div></div>

LOL! Your post is very interesting. That is a very nice 10 shot group. But did you by chance chrono those 10 rounds to know your extreme spread on your velocity? It makes a big difference out past 100 yards.
Also, why handload- so you don't have to post looking for factory ammo! Your options are endless when you hndload ammo. I'n not dogging your post, I just thought it was very interesting!

I turned a mandrel on the mini lathe and neck turned on it. Good idea to contact William and ask what is the neck on the reamer he used for this particular client of his, whom I bought the rifle from. To check for neck diameter by firing I intend to fire form a couple of neck turned and resized Remington BR brass with small primers. With .010 wall they should be safe to fire with no worry. Then I can finalize the proper wall thickness.

Thank you for your help.
