Gunsmithing .270 creed??

After reading MULEHUNTERS post on his 270wsm i could help but think of a 270 creed. with a 6.5 creed necked up to .277.. Matrix has come out with some VLD bullets in the .277 caliber that look real promising. They have a 165gr VLD that has been tested at a muzzle velocity of 3,000fps to have a G1 BC of .650. They also have a 175gr VLD that has a tested BC of .700.

with one of those bullets in the creed case shouldnt that be the best you could get with standerd boltface and short action?? i know you velocity would be 2700fps but i still think you would have a winner!!

I'd prefer a .284 bullet before a .277, and a .264 before a .284.

The bullet weights vs BC's just seem more efficient for the case capacity, and the .284 and .264 diameter bullets may have a better selection of LR Match-capable candidates. I've always considered the .277 bore to be more appealing as a hunting caliber.

The .270 Win is usually present on the shelf as a hunting load, while the .280 Rem, which I prefer, tends not to be. Of the two, for non-hunting applications, the .280 floats my boat very nicely.

More importantly, dies for the 6.5 C/M are already available; and I suspect the 7 C/M will be available before a 6.8/.277 C/M comes out.

The 7mm creed looks very promising I would imagine Hornady will eventually standardize it and 6mm, the 270 version may take a pretty good while. That being said nobody is stopping you from building your own.

im leanig just doing a 260 but was really giving this a look. do you think the gain going with a 270 c/m is worth it over a 260?? the 270 c/m is going to cost a lot more....

My opinion is that if you are comfortable spending the extra money for the Matrix bullets, buying your own reamer and custom dies then it would be a interesting project. Sure the extra gain in BC might give you 3" less wind drift at 1000Y over a 260 but I doubt if you could get the 175's up to 2600 fps without a really long barrel or even the 165's to 2700 fps or be able to ever notice the difference between them all side by side at distance except for the recoil and energy.

Me personally, I'd pick something with more powder capacity for the matrix bullets or stay with 260, 6.5 Creed, 6.5x47L if you prefer "6.5 cal" as the next best thing.

I like my 6x47L because of the low recoil and excellent ballistics for now. If I weren't hamstrung by a 3100fps velocity cap at the tactical matches I'd seriously consider 6mm Crusader with the new Berger 105 hybrids. 3300 fps with .545 G1 BC is very hard to beat.

The sole unique advantage of the Creedmore case is the likely ability to get longer 6.5 bullets to seat in a better relationship to the rifling, while still having an OAL that can feed from a short action's magazine length.

This is a possible drawback with the .260. I resolve this by employing the slightly shorter 140SMK instead of 142SMK in applications where mag feeding is most likely (i.e. my Savage Predator Hunter), and I believe the 120SMK would be excellent as well, maybe expecially in a semi. Back in 2002 at Whittington Center, the pioneer .260 shooters were getting both of them to perform out to 1000yd. The 142 is better still, but I acknowledge the additional length and shoot them over a single-feed follower.

I don't shoot the 7-08 or 6.5 C/M, so I can't testify regarding the OAL's that could result from using larger diameter bullets; but... I would not be surprised if these bigger bullets carry an OAl penalty with them that might fully compromise the C/M case's only valid advantage.

I suspect your desire may have potential for disappointment in this area.

I know how a 'bolt from the blue' can monopolize one's imagination. That's precisely what happened with me regarding the .260. As a counterbalance, I reexamine our environment to see who else has come up with such ideas. If it's nobody, I give a lot more weight to the possibility of impracticality as opposed to originality. Our sport has no shortage of highly adequate chamberings. I think we are reaching a plateau where more chamberings simply duplicate existing capabilities, and new chamberings serve vanity perhaps more than genuine need. I have neither the means nor the desire to be the individual 'breaking the new trail' by prototyping a new chambering.

What you propose may fit into this niche, and it would likely be rather expensive to verify either way.

In my situation, trying an existing chambering first makes the best sense. I have shot the .260 as my LR precision chambering for going on a decade. While other chamberings do have a more decisive performance, they do so at a cost overhead that keeps bringing me back to some reassurance that the .260, at least for me, has never exhibited any compelling disappointment.

Stop leaning toward the .260 and take the leap squarely in its direction. Best advice I can vouch for.

No, because you can push the 6.5mm bullets much faster than a heavier .277" bullet in the same case. The 6.5mm bullet has a very high BC also, and is moving faster. If you just want a wild-cat, then go for it. But ballistically speaking, the 6.5mm in that case is as good as it gets.

Greg, thank you for your post it just fules the fire to do a 260 with the 142smk with a alpha 2 mag i can load them into the lands if i wanted to.

7mm Creedmoor has been done already. Mark Gordon at SAC started testing with it and shortly after his test rifle started producing good solid results I had him build me one on a custom action.

This thing is a hammer. Right now Im seeing 2820 on the chrono and after about 100 rounds these barrels always speed up a bit, then I tweak my final load.

Think of this as a 284 on a short action. Its a great round.

Which Alpha Mag? It fits in the AW mags with room to spare as I have it loaded right now..

I'm gratifed that I was able to help. Simply put, I've had nearly a decade to weigh the same questions you've voiced here, and i feel it would have been unkind of me to make you find out the hard way, as I did.

At 65, even though I can probably afford more guns than once was the case, I am also trying to winnow out the few most effective chamberings for my particular needs.

For LR, I like the .260 Rem as my favorite 6.5, and the .280 Rem as my favorite 7mm. I think those case capacities and bore diameters are very close to ideal for LR-capable bullets.

For training, especially for my Grandkids, I like .22LR for R/F applications, and 7.62x39 for C/F out to 250 yd. My 250yd and under match project is being built around the .30BR.

For a general purpose 30 cal, I really favor the .30-'06. For a carbine chambering I like the Win 94AE levergun chambered in 44 Rem Mag.

For shotgun apps, I go strictly with the 20ga, with #3 and #4 buck, #4 steel, rifled slugs, and sabots. I have a Charles Daly semi, an 11-87, a Mossberg rifled bolt gun, and wish I had a Saiga 20. For 'we-all-go-to-hell-now', I have an 870 12ga and 00 buck.

if it was a long action id go .280 if i every rebarrel my dads 270 it will be!!

after this im going 260 just need to go to the rock group buy and get a 6.5mm blank.
