28 nosler build questions

i posted this on the ELR thread but no one has responded yet so i will try it here.

If i were to build a rifle chambered in 28 Nosler, would my action from R700 chambered 7mm Rem Mag work? would i need to change the bolt face? Also assuming that i would to be loading 180gr VLD's what barrel twist would i use? 1:9 maybe?

i really dont know much about the 28 Nosler it still seems to be a pretty new cartridge but it seems like it would be a great fit for my needs.

Mag bolt face will work fine , you'll want an 8 twist to use the 195's. A 26" 28 Nosler will send a 195 Berger over 3100 , take full advantage of the BC vs the 180's. Use an extended mag box to maximize COAL , enjoy.

I think you might want to use an Ultra Mag action to handle the case diameter. The internal rails are opened up a bit for the UM vs a standard magnum. Bolt face is the same.

Should the box mag be the same as if I were building a .338LM?

Use a cip mag or an extended box. Your action will require a little modification to let the bolt open far enough and for the box to fit. And as mentioned, you'll have to open the rails a little bit, but quick work with a file. I'd run the 195's, well I am actually, but I know a lot of people still run the 180's. I don't know what mag length you'd need for th 180's so you might not need to go to all that trouble, not sure...

what kind of barrel life should i expect out of a 28 Nosler? it seems like it will be a barrel burner

2000 rounds if you don't hotrod it. 1000 or less depending on how bad you hotrod it.

If the rails are opened up to accommodate the 28 Nosler, will that keep me from ever going back to a 300 or 7 Mag?

I just email John Beanland and asked about a "parts list" if you will, and to see what he thinks is the best way to go about this. He emailed me back within ten minutes telling me to call him to discuss the build. I will let you know what we come up with tomorrow. I would have called him tonight but Game of Thrones was on, so yeah

From what i was told when i ask the guy at Defiance, they said that you should be able to go back to it if you use a center feed box mag. But without that it might not work because the rails had to be opened up. He did say that he has never gone back to a smaller cartridge so he wasnt 100%

Thanks 186th. I didn't plan on using a DBM, just the internal with hinged floor plare which staggers cartridges.
