Whats your guys opinion, would a rifle chambered in 28 Nosler be too much for a white tail deer? I have used a 7mm Rem Mag before with no real excess meat loss but I fear with more velocity and a heavier 195gr bullet it might lose a lot of a front shoulder or two. I wont be shooting at deer 50 yards away or anything like that more like 250-300. Let me know what you guys think.

I should mention that I am getting this rifle for bigger game out west (elk, mule deer) but I still would like to use it back home when I can.

too much for deer i think is subjective to maybe a kill vs meat loss ration...I guess would be a way to say it. Like a .50 bmg would be great for killing, but you would loose like 1/4 or more meat...I don't think the 28 nosler will have that problem long story short.

The 28 nosler is a great pick for elk and mule deer.
Should be fine with the 195 gr on whitetails since your velocity will be more reasonable. Last season guys shot coues here with the 195 and it was similiar to a 7mm mag with 168s

It's not too much. Heck, I shoot Texas whitetail with a 300wm sometimes, just because that's the rifle I felt like using that day. It's all about bullet choice and shot placement. High shoulder shot (best!) will not effect useable meat nor will a 'behind the shoulder' double lung shot or a frontal chest shot. Pick a bullet that holds together really well, like a partition, if your going to blast right through the front shoulder (aside from the high shoulder, where there's little useable meat) because it'll have less of an explosive effect than a ballistic tip, designed to explode on impact. Our deer don't have all that much meat on the front shoulders so it's never been much concern; and I shoot in excess of 30 deer (shooting management deer) annually so meat isn't in short supply. Lol. I just don't think you have anything to worry about if you do a little planning in terms of your bullet choice and it's terminal performance and the appropriate shot placement for that bullet.

FWIW - my #1 shot is in the neck.
