280 out to 1000 yards

Re: 280 out to 1000 yards

Just a curiosity, but I seem to remember that the 280 is a 7mm (284) bullet and meant to compete with the 284 win? It's based on the 30-06 necked to a 7mm if memory from Hunter's Safety serves me right (from 15 yars ago).

If that's the case, then the heavy 7mm VLD's would certainly get you there and I think you should get some really good velocities out of them with all that case capacity.

I might be talking out of my ass on the case dimensions, but you can easily reach 1k with a 7mm-06 if that's indeed what the 280 is.

Thought so, glad to know I'm not totally mindless at 25 y/o

Re: 280 out to 1000 yards

Shootone and I took my 280 AI out today. First time for both of us to shoot 1k. Burned through quite a bit of ammo and held a 8 inch group shooting at a 10x12 steel plate. I am thrilled with the 280. Shoots way better than I ever expected. I am running 56.5 grains of RL22 AND 180 vldS

Re: 280 out to 1000 yards

Seems like most guys shooting 280's these days are shooting the Improved version. Was shooting mine today at 500, favors 175 SMK's with 60 gr. of RL 25 at 2786 from a 25 in Hart barrel.
I shot a lot of Berger 180's with RL 25 with mixed results. Going to try your load with RL 22.
