I read these posts numerous times before posting my own:

-SA .284 Win – Range Report (author - 284win)

-7mm-08 or 284 in SA w/AI mags (author - blue_ridge)

-7mm-08 & heavy target bullets (author - BobinNC)

-I would be very interested to hear from those authors, and those who contributed to the above articles; .257, 300sniper, 7mmRM, Bohem, Graham, JJoplin, kyreloader, Sobrbiker883.

-I also read this; 6mmbr.com/gunweek095.html (Purple haze .284 rifle)

I want to buy/build a semi-auto rifle chambered in 7mm08 and to be capable of shooting the 180gr berger VLD.

It has been stated here that it is difficult (impossible?) to chamber the 7mm(284) for 180’s in a short action bolt rifle as the bullet is crammed into the case & jammed into the lands, and you run into magazine length issues . (COAL? SH members -BCP and steelcomp said that I am looking at approximately 2.8-2.84 of total room in an AR10.)

---Do these issues apply equally to semi auto platforms? Are they even more prevalent/difficult to overcome?

-Keeping that in mind is it even possible to build the semi-auto rifle described above? Could I get around this by building on a semi originally chambered in a different caliber-338 or 300wm/wsm or 7rem-mag/saum or anything?

-I can use anything chambered in 308 and add any 7mm barrel to make a 7mm08 platform correct?

---Is there any way to Frankenstein an AR10 in 7mm08 for the heavy bullets?

Re: 284 Semi auto / 7mm08 / 180gr VLD / twist rate

Ditto. Problem with the 7-08 in a SA platform is not enough COAL capacity. The AR10 mag has the longest OAL of all the SA's, and at 2.835-2.840 you still can't load long enough to really take advantage of the 7mm bullets.
