Has nothing to do with the steel that's in it. Has to do with it being a putty like product. Devcon or Steel-Bed work the best for how I do it. Some epoxies and JB Weld are too thin and want to self level. Unless someone wants to experiment with some other stuff the Steel-Bed and Devcon are proven to work as needed.

thanks guys, i knew it was an accra product, just not which one. will 2 oz be enough? its the smallest amount they sell before jumping up to a pint i think? the 2oz kit came with dyes too. i wondered about bedliner also. but its the amount im concerned about too, how much do you need?

and its the marine tex epoxy putty right? http://www.marinetex.com/marinetexepoxyputty.html

Re: 2oz acraglass kit enough to texture a stock?

I would choose MTex over Accra, but my #1 choice would still be Devcon or Steel bed.

and yes, thats the stuff.

Re: 2oz acraglass kit enough to texture a stock?

I like the AcraGlas Gel for this type project. Easy to handle, stays put, and tints well. Get yourself some of the very dense, closed cell foam such as is packed around electronics...big holes... cut it into handy pieces, and use it to dab the gel around where you want it. Picks the gel up in little peaks...which you can smooth with a damp finger as it begins to set. You can get the roughness on the sides and smooth on the bag riding underside that way. JMHO

i knew it was acra something. i heard about the devcon too as well as the marine tex, not the steel bed. ill look around, glad that 2 oz will do. no sense having to waste a bunch by getting more than i need.

come on, someone here has tried bedliner...

Re: 2oz acraglass kit enough to texture a stock?

I bought some cheap bed-liner stuff from Walmart to try. I sprayed a box with it to test it out...and I'm just going to use it to paint my grill. Its rough spray paint. The roll on stuff may be different, but I was pretty stupid to think the spray would actually provide a usable texture.

Tried it on my 10/22 with gorilla liner IIRC. It was the roll on type and was left over from my buddies jeep. Did the whole stock... so yeah... ended up with a horrible check weld but great grip on the rest of the rifle. It also takes a good beating in the back of the jeep ithout much to show for it.

With better planning I would do it again.

I'll look around to see if I have any pics. I'm deployed and wont be able to take any now.

It would be nice if pics of different epoxies were posted as I'm sure they all settle differently.

Re: 2oz acraglass kit enough to texture a stock?

good looking rifles. i just got tired of messing with the epoxies and used a spray on tool handle type stuff. ill ride it out and see how it holds up. i just really got tired of messing with epoxy. when i found marine tex, it just didnt look like it was gonna be enough for my stock, the small size at least, so i passed on that

Here are some pics of the first stock I did. I got the info straight from R&D's do it yourself page DIY

I used steel bed and sanded it with 150 after it set to knock of the spikes. Feels good and has been durable so far. Needs paint when you finish though unless you don't mind the shine.
