30-06 build for long range!

Finally got around to assembling my first bolt gun. Plan is to shoot out to 1000 yards for fun and maybe do some deer hunting from box stands or my back porch. Gun ended up a little heavier that I thought close to 20lbs.

Haven’t got the chance to shoot it yet but already looking at building another one. Next investment will be some reloading equipment and go down that rabbit hole.

I’ve just got some 168 grain ELDM and 178 grain ELDX from Hornady at the moment in factory ammo. Once I get into hand loading I may look into something a little heavier.

What is your barrel length? I'd be looking into the 200 grain bullets and such.

For 1,000 yard shooting, I'd be looking into the Berger 215 Hybrids.

Also, for powders, I'd recommend IMR 7828 SSC and CCI 200 primers. Get some Lapua brass if you plan to make serious loads for serious 1K shooting.

26” barrel, Berger makes a 200 grain hybrid target that may suit my needs well for fun shooting. Got to find a decent hunting load as well but that’s not as critical as I have other guns ALOT lighter to chase the deer.

Nice looking rifle. Should do very well to 1000 and then some. Check out the Hornady 200 and 212 ELD-X for hunting and the 208 ELD-M for target. Would be the bullet range I would be looking at with that set up.

I’ve been running a 30-06 on Quantico’s Range 4 since 2008 or so, first with 208 AMAX, then 208 ELDM and lately Berger 208 Hybrid Target bullets that have all been sent down rage with a German Salazar Serengeti chamber/reamer.

I’m also on my third barrel for this R700 action. Current barrel is a Brux Heavy Varmint 10 twist, finished at 29 inches.

208 Bergers in current barrel run 2730FPS @ 325ASL 70F. The sweet spot for these particular bullets (for me anyway) is between 2710 and 2730 FPS. I’m using Fed 210Ms, Lapua brass and RL17.

In my previous Bartlien 23.5 in barrel I could run the 208 ELDMs at 2750FPS as well.

I toyed with the idea years ago of doing a .30-06 for my first precision bolt gun build. My reasoning was that with reloading you have a wide range of bullets and velocities to play with and that, at least in my AO, there is ALWAYS .30-06 on the shelf since it's only used for hunting around here.
