.30-06 with 155?

I have been watching the trend of using heavier higher BC bullets in the .30-06 with great interest, but was wondering if there has been much experimenting with the 155? To give a little backround I have now had both shoulders operated on, and although I like the idea of slinging 208, 210's, physically it wouldn't be the best idea for me.

So seeing that F-class tries to get the 155 to 3000fps or so with long 29 and 30 inch barrels (.308). I was wondering what you could get out of 155's in something like .30-06 with a 24 or 26 inch barrel?

3100fps is possible, depending on who made your rifle and barrel 3200+ is plausible.
The only reason to use a 155 in a match is because you are limited to that by Palma rules. Using the 155 against open class shooters out to 1000yds is putting yourself behind the eightball. A 16lb 30-06 using H4350 and a 190 SMK does not kick enough to make my 12 year old wince. Tkae the same bullet and pack 4831SC in the case and it is less than comfortable.
I do have a friend who had neck surgery and he has had to relegate most of his shooting to lighter recoil like the 6BR so I can see where you are coming from, but a bit heavier rifle should help a lot. You don't have to shoot 208's and 210's in an '06 to reach way out there, but 155's aren't that great. I would try the 175 SMK before I mess around with 155's. If you have some bullets to trade I have some new boxes of 155's if you want to try them.

I'am looking at the Nosler book right now and it says the 150an 155 with IMR4350 AT MAX LOAD OF 59.0 will reach 3000 fps and that's with a 24" barrel.That's what the book says so its more than likely less than that.

Not really true there... the 155 has a different bullet design which gives it a very high BC for its weight. It is actually a pretty long bullet.

I don't know that you get that much recoil reduction from staying with lighter bullets. If recoil is a concern, why not go 308?

For another high BC for its weight bullet, the 175 gr Berger LRBT packs a lot of BC into 175 grains.

Don't get me wrong... I love the 175gr SMK... mainly because it is so easy to get it to shoot well AND it flies well in the transonic range AND it has a good enough BC to get it to 1,000 in 308 with a little heat. My problem is that I get one feature or the other. If I am not pushing it hard, it is really accurate at short range. If I push it, it loses short range accuracy, but stays safely transonic in long range (where I shoot, which is pretty low altitude). I am not bagging on the 175 at all, but for high BC at lower weights, there are better options.

Carter I have always thought you were a pretty smart guy....

What exactly did I say that was not true? I did not say the 155 was not a good bullet design or even say it was not longer than a 155 should be. In open FClass you will be facing a whole shitload of balistically superior bullets to the 155SMK.

You don't really believe lighter bullets cause less recoil? Are you serious? Like I said I thought you were pretty smart.
Do you believe in the laws of physics?
Recoil is a function of the weight of a bullet and its powder charge combined. I have done some informal testing on the functions of bullet weight and charge weight in recent years, in my quest to shoot a pistol with a rifle scope with great accuracy from the prone position. When you hold a pistol 4 inches from your face you quickly deduce even the subtlest differnces in recoil. Lighter bullets, have in all cases I have tried, reduced recoil a noticable amount.

Thanks for the responses guys......gives me food for thought. Carter I always like the 175, and really want to try the heavier bullets. It just wouldn't be smart for me. Again thanks guys.
