30-06…. Anyone use this anymore ?

What I will be using because it is what I have. However, just have sporter barrel. Will just be taking my time between shots. Getting back in the game and want to make sure I still enjoy it before shooting my load.

If you can rotate your car tires yourself then you can change a barrel yourself. Tons of shops offer them.
It uses a “go gauge” as a depth gauge to control how deep you thread the barrel into the action and then a “barrel nut” as a jam nut to hold it there.

I’d get a contour that’s at least .7” at the muzzle and thread it 5/8x24

Northland shooter supply is a sort of one stop shop for it all with good prices and customer service and you could do it for 700 bucks the first time, subsequent barrels are only like 450 since you would already have the tools.

The only bull I can find is the Remington 700 Long Range.
I see some used Savage 112’s out there. Savage use to make heavy barrel target , Palma,& varmint 30/06’s. But no more.

Worked over 700, Vortex HD LHT 3-15x50 G4i reticle, 28 inch Krieger, Serengeti chamber. 53.8-54 RL-17, FGMM 215M, 215 Berger Hybrids. LC 67 Match, fully prepped. Rifle work, chambering, etc. all done in the garage.

Last Saturday lighting the Magnetospeed hit indicator velcroed behind the E silhouette at 1200.

Load is very hot in the high 80 weather.

I have an idea to build out a nice 30-06 since that was my first rifle I ever bought. I just got to get going on an action and stock.

Anything the 308 does, the ‘06 does just a bit better. Until the heavier bullet weights, then the ‘06 runs away from the 308. Had my Kimber Montana out to 600, with lots of time between rounds. Have dreams of building a pre ‘64 m70 as a resto-mod…

I built a custom R700 in a 26" .30-06 AI 40º about 10 years back. It shoots the Berger 185 VLD's really well...Like 1-hole well. But I just don't have any real desire to shoot the rifle, so I am thinking about punching the chamber out to .300 Sherman just to make full use of the .30-06 case.

But I have considered turning it into a .257x284 Norma Improved with a custom reamer with a 40º shoulder. I have a brand new Proof Research CF .257 1:7.5" blank sitting in the closet for a few years, just waiting on me to make up my mind. I was going to use that barrel for my custom .25-06 AI 40º when it gives up the ghost, but I don't shoot that rifle much anymore either, as I have more desire to mess with the SA cartridges these days. I'm sure I'll get back around to them someday.

Mine started out as a Rem 700 30-06 long range.
Added a whiskey 3 chassis and bolt knob, Huber 2 stage trigger, S&B scope, Seekins rings and base, Atlas bipod and hawk hill talon feet.
Shot it out to 1250 yards, the longest my range goes to. Old caliber that still gets it done

Here is my 30-06 and a 5 shot group it pit down the day I brought it home from a rebarrel and loads from my previous barrel. I think it had about 10-15 rounds down the barrel at this point. Rem 700 action, 28” Bartlein barrel with PT&G Serengeti “rev D” cut chamber and my TBAC U7 on the end.. it still hammers with around 1k down the bore now I’m shooting berger 200.20x’s, lapua brass, 59.0gr H4831sc and that puts me at a avg velocity of about 2760. I have pushed it to about 2820 with that same bullet but primer pocket life took a dump so I backed it down. I only shoot to 1,000 yards anyway so it’s plenty.

edit to add: thats a 1/2” dot I was shooting at.

It is warm, but no hard lift or ejector marks, and no flattened primers. Loaded rounds are single loading only. 215 boat tail junction is above the shoulder junction. CBTO is 2.743 with the Creedmoor Sports nut.

@MontanaMarine load work with RL-17 and 215s was what inspired me to pursue the 215 option.

That’s the load I run in my 06 with 215 bergers and 54gr of RL17. I don’t start to see an ej mark until 57gr with a COAL of 3.605”

I ran an ought6 for a couple years. Benchmark barrel @ 27" running 200berger ahead of h4831.
It had a nice wide node without drama at bout 2760fps.

Have 20" barrel Winchester Model 70 Carbine.

Good to carry and hunt with.

(My Dad had a Model 70 Pre-War that I used several times when in high school)

Does not shoot well with bullets lighter than ~168, so I use heavier bullets, 175gr and up in this one.

With a lot of attention being directed toward the 6.5 mm caliber in recent years and human nature being what it is, shooters seem to be gravitating toward the 'New Show Room Model'. Kind of like going to buy a new car and thinking 'well it is bright and shiny plus it smells nice' (as well as the sales person being pushy) 'so it must be better and maybe I should buy into it'.

Enough of my digression. The venerable .30-06 has been around a long time and was for a time showing up on the leader board at the Wimbledon Cup Match at Camp Perry. Sure there were 7mm Mags and 300 Win Mags out there but the .30-06 usually did what they did for a lot less free recoil, powder consumption and barrel wear. Not to mention potential hearing loss of fellow shooters and bystanders.

My Palma and 1,000 yd. shooting is usually done with a Remington 700 LA that has a 26" SS Krieger 4 groove, twist in 11, tight bore screwed onto it that has a quasi MTU taper to it. Receiver is clip slotted as well as drilled and taped for iron sights and scope rings. It also has a front barrel band when I want to go 'Palma' and iron sights.

Stock is a 40-XC duplicate that was milled from one of three black cherry blanks that I came across through a deal with Barrett Obermeyer.

Sights can be either a Weaver T-16 or a Redfield International.

My Palma and/or 1,000 yd. load is either 53 grains of IMR4350 behind a 190 grain Sierra HPBT MK kicked off by a Fed 210 match primer or 53 grains of IMR4831 behind a 200 grain Sierra HPBT MK also kicked off by a Fed 210 match primer.

Yes my stuff is old school and most likely antiquated or outdated but it still serves my purposes well. It hits paper and puts a smile on my face.

What more can one ask.

I have a few but nothing too crazy. One is a tikka t3x that has had the barrel cut back and threaded. I’ve used it for mountain goat and caribou hunts.

My other one is a Winchester model 70 extreme weather that I don’t shoot much these days but just can’t make myself get rid of it.

I have a bunch of different hand loads that shoot well in them.

It was past dusk yesterday when I read your post so took some photos earlier today when the light was better.
First photo is the 06 in the case and second photo is all the accoutrements moved out of the way. The third photo is the 06 to the far right. The fourth and fifth photos are the two sides of the 06.

Yes it is old but just taking it out of the case and setting it up for the photos made me smile. Thanks for requesting.

Built a custom 3006, LRI did the work. Great rifle but not exactly what I would choose for a range gun.

Built it to shoot ~180 grain bullets at animals.

I was getting 2800 fps with a 26" barrel. Cut it to 22.5" to add a brake, and velocity dropped to 2720 or so, depending on conditions.

just my .02 but 6.5x55 and '06 are both old rounds which the new stuff beats by a little bit,but not much. to me they both are still viable,excellent rounds. if i reloaded,i might be shooting the old guys,not 308 & 6.5 cm. always thought 30/06 AI was the pick of the 30 cal litter.
