30-338 LM AI

No experience. I feel like my 300 Norma Imp (basically RUM capacity) is already pretty overbore, so I worry about finding suitable powders that give good case fill in a necked down Lapua. I've pushed 230s at 3150 out of the Norma with RL33 and great case fill characteristics. How much performance do you need?

Don't mean to discourage you. That Lapua case is a wildcatters dream.

I'm testing one. It's a little more overbore than a 28 Nosler, less than a 26 Nosler. You can take a guess at barrel life from that.

This one is at 120 grains of water for case capacity. Depending on the reamer, it could be a few grains higher.

I'm guessing that with maximum seating length, maybe 3150 fps with single based powders, 3200ish with Reloder50 for the 250 Atip. I have some 230 Atips to try. I'm using a 32" barrel.

I've been shooting my version of the 30/338 LM Improved called the 300 WAMBOMAG for 15 years, it has a 35* shoulder pushed back .060" to get a slightly longer neck.
With a 31" barrel it pushes the JLK 210 VLD'S out at 3250 fps using 93grs of Retumbo.
It's the only load I've used because it so darn accurate, during load testing it shot a 5 shot group of 1.375" at 600yds and .5 moa or better at 1000.

What twist are you running? Im liking this cartridge. Might be a nice addition to my 338 LM AI>...........

I picked up a Surgeon XL in 300 NM w 1-10 twist. I really don't want to shoot it w a 1-10 so either rechamber it to something faster or turn it into another 338 LM AI as a heavy gun.

The Surgeon XL in an AICS is my current dream gun. I just need to figure out what cartridge.

The current Midway sale on Lapua 338 Lapua brass for $80/100 has sucked all the joy out of my 300 Norma.

I won the first URSA 2K match with a 1:10 300wm using the 230 Hybrids. The DA was ~4000'. The 215s should work anywhere.

You need a second Mary Jane ELR rifle because Ginger needs to be rebarreled often.

I’m sure the 215s will work. I’m at sea level and ran the numbers. It’s marginal stability. I just have a need for speed ?

Its sold out now. It was going on FB 338 forum last night. Lapua made brass for Barnes so the story goes.

Mine is an 1-11" twist Lilja 3 groove.

If I had a 300 Norma and wanted more speed I'd punch it out to the 30/338 Lapua IMP, should be able to get at least 3250 and that would be fully stable at sea level and 59*.
Thats exactly what i was thinking! Great minds think alike. Might shoot this rifle. Supposedly only had 1 box of factory Berger 215s through it.
