30 year cash for dropping made up charges scandal busted in NM

Pay cash to get made up or sometimes even real charges dropped - involved at least 3 police departments a few judges and centered around one criminal defense attorney. Ran for nearly 30 years.

Their most lucrative hustle was arresting sober drivers for DUI and charging them $8-$9 thousand to get the charges dismissed- a scam that pays so well we’ve seen it in several other states the last 3-5 years MI FL TN KY OH. Anything to turn a buck to supplement that pension and stay away from dangerous criminals I guess .

How the state will even begin to u fuck the system of false arrests and false imprisonments and outright looting of the citizens over 30 years is anyone’s guess I assume they will do nothing and quietly hire back the officers involved and make sure the judges don’t lose their pensions

So far there has been guilty pleas to - Rico- racketeering- bribery- the involvement of the NM state police spread it state wide .

They did it for decades where my brother lived in Georgia. Get a dui, buy an in-car camera system and get charges dropped and expunged.

GBI finally stepped in when it got too big. A cop who collected US military rifles wanted to high grade some guys collection for a dui pass and he called the governor.

I know of someone that got a DUI (legitimately), got the right lawyer, paid $12k, and it went away. Never even had their license revoked.

That some amazing lawyering / legal maneuvering- not the same thing as paying $8500 to make a fake dui “go away”. And the real fucked up thing - even when these folks blew 0.0 or well below legal limit they still got charged and prosecuted- and some even did time - that’s where the judges come in to this dirty little trick.
