i am looking to get some advice on a 16.5 inch 300 blackout barrel i have for ar platform. I have my own machine shop and i just upgraded to 300 hammer . I live in new york so suppressors are illegal, and now the 16.5 blackout is kinda redundant that I have the hammer. I was thinking of cutting it down to 8 to 10 inches and recrowning , and use it subsonic on my ar pistol , but would there be any real noise advantage? My pistol already has a 10 inch 7.62 x 39 barrel , any suggestions?

I don't think subs without a can can justify their greatly inferior terminal performance. Not to mention having to tune for subs and more expensive ammo.

A 300blk shooting supers will have much less muzzle blast than most rifle cartridges at that short barrel length, including the x39. It will also have less recoil, better mags (IMO), and vastly better bullet/load selection than x39. The better bullets more than make up for the drop in energy.

That's kinda what I was thinking, also the 300 hammer has far superior ballistics than both the blackout, and the 7.62 x 39 in supers. I built the 10 inch 39 pistol just for fun with cheaper ammo. The hammer is also much easier to load for as theres much less case trimming. Only idea I had with subsonic blackout was possibly using cast lead 250 slugs, but I wonder if bare lead would plug the gas port. I tought of relief port drilling the 16.5 blackout barrel starting at the 8 inch mark 16 1/8 inch holes 1/2 inch apart all the way to the muzzle, and see if that would provide a quieting effect on subsonic loads, but that's a risk that might do absolutely nothing! .If it worked would that make it an integral suppressor? ...I am guessing it couldn't be that easy! Ha ha.

But the 300 hammer does all that and more, better mags, better ballistics, .308 slugs, and easier handloading. The 7.62 x 39 has the advantage of cheaper shelf ammo, but the 300 hammer is the winner in the supers, and blackout and hammer super ammo are about the same cost and Availability. I think the only advantage to the blackout is subsonic with a can? Just what I seem to be learning?

Subs without a can will still LOUD…

45 ACP ammo is subsonic, and the bullets are in same weight range as 300 BO. Expect roughly the same volume of report.

I love my 300BLK uppers…and shoot more 300BLK than all my other calibers combined, but the 300 HAMR is a better round.

If you’ve already made the leap, just stay there. No need to try to reinvent the wheel. If I wasn’t so heavily invested in 300BLK, I’d do it too, but I literally have almost a dozen 300BLK uppers, and thousands of rounds on hand…plus enough 300BLK brass to keep me busy reloading for the rest of my lifetime! LoL

Sell the 300BLK barrel, and enjoy the HAMR.

Thanks guys for the advice, I probably will opt to sell or trade it , with a brand new set of rcbs sb dies.
Ok, so now I have a 10 inch 7.62 x 39, a 16.5, inch 30 hammr , a 20 inch .223 blank I will probably build into standard 5.56. Any suggestions what I should "trade" it for? 6.5 grendel? (Eh?) , 6, or 6.5 ARC, (eh?) , 6mm ppc(hmm) , ...nothing really seems exciting or worth it.,......what is exciting now a days, 458?. I have a bunch of 45 win mag stuff , I though of my pistol .
