Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I thought I would share a rifle build.
While I am sure there are plenty of, good, ground up builds on the hide, I just wanted to share my own and some of the logic behind part selection or background on the direction that I have taken.
Let me start with making it clear why I am building versus buying. I don't like buying a whole rifle, just to change everything and be left with a pile of parts.
So while I could have bought the Bergara Premier LRP for about $2k, I opted to buy the parts and pieces that I have experience using and/or wanted to use.
First the Bergara Premier receiver - I have shot a friends Bergara a few times and it was smooth to operate and had a nice finish. While mine came in raw matte stainless finish, I cerakote'd it "Armor Black" (24:1 ratio matte finish, sorry for the lack of pics for the cerakote process).
Also with PRS being so popular and 2020 being a Sh@tshow, choking on a bag of D@cks, inside of a dumpster fire all other options of receiver in my price range were unavailable.
Timney 2-stage trigger- I have always liked the feel of a 2 stage trigger and most of my other rifles are all Timney and have had great luck with them.
Vortex Razor HD Gen-II, H59 reticle FFP - Not much to say, this is a great scope in this price range with a great reticle.
Spuhr scope mount - This had an additional + 3 mil tilt to add to the + 6 mil scope base (NF Base). Also like the ability to add on other options if I later feel the need for something. One thing I like is the "send it" electronic level indicator and Spuhr sells a mount for it as an add on.
Preferred Barrel blanks - I have a 27" heavy palma, 1-9 twist, (remage mount), 5/8-24 threaded (with thread protector) on order. These guys were great and communicated with me on my dumb questions. I had mentioned that I will be using the 0.312 recoil lug which they said they will take into account when threading the barrel for the remage nut. The lead time is like 10 weeks, so that will be available sometime in Jan-Feb.
Badger Ordnance - Heavy Recoil Lug- this is the 0.312 recoil lug.
XLR Element 3.0 Chassis - This was mainly purchased because they were the only company that actually replied to my humble email to ask about magazine compatibility. I had it narrowed down to MDT, XLR, and AICS. While XLR was at the lower end of my budget they simply communicated with me (in email) about magazines and cartridges, also non-XLR parts compatibility on their chassis. While this is my first interaction with them, I am impressed.
Lead time is 6 - 8 weeks, so this should be arriving sometime in Jan.
This will be a slow build thread - I will update as time and parts become available. Until next time I thought I would leave you with some parts porn. Thanks!
