300 Rum Build

The action is a Savage 110
The stock is a Bell and Carlson
I added AICS bottom metal and Mag
The barrel is a FAXON M24 Contour Blank 27" 1:10 Twist

First I zeroed the barrel in the lathe and cut the receiver threads, then chambered carefully. I then cut the muzzle for a brake 5/8 24. I had to seriously inlet the stock to free float this barrel.

Out at the range today, the rifle is shooting the federal fusion tipped 180gr over 91.5gr of N570 into a single hole, 7 shot group all can covered with a dime. Seems this one is good to go now. Very low recoil, like shooting a 22 250.

My data shows 91.5gr (Max safe published load) of N570 is around 64k pressure but I see NO SIGNS, running a 180gr pill at 3300fps should be serious medicine for the dear this year :)

I presume you are at magazine Max length with those 180s? What is your COAL and how far are you off the land? Oh, and what brass? Nosler?

I have had three of the RUM over the last 20 years and the major difficulty is getting them to feed through a magazine, getting a magazine that allows Long heavy bullets to fit, and getting good brass that can take the pressure for several reloads

But that one definitely shoots good

I added AICS bottom metal and a magazine with a length of 3.850 so I can seat out pretty far. I set my load .040 of the lands at 3.815. I am using Peterson brass. I do NOT crimp my brass. I am using N570 and Remington 9 1/2 Mag primers. Hope that helps, I will mention I build my own rifles and am very precise in my machine work on my receivers and barrels, almost OCD :)

NOTE: Over torque of barrels seems to be a major issue in these HOT magnums (Especially in factory rifles). I only apply 40lbs of torque with red locktite to secure. Also I have developed a chambering process that really works for me. I take my time and try to keep the chamber cutting very cool, often stopping, waiting, and coming back. Heat deviation can cause up to .002 of diameter change and make for loose chambers in my experience, like I said, I am ocd. Last but not least, Headspace. To tight headspace causes stringing issues, I like to be on the looser end of the acceptable tolerance, the case should NOT be difficult to chamber. You should feel very little resistance to closing the bolt handle, people like to have tight headspace, you should actually shoot for "proper" headspace :)

Great shooter without breaking the bank on the build!

I run 92.3gr N570 in a 338 rum with 300 Bergers. The 300 rum is a bigger case and a 180 is a midweight bullet. I bet you can go up at least another 2gr, maybe 3, before pressure.

Yes I agree, just not sure I need run it any harder with the accuracy I am getting. Lower pressure is easier on the brass. However I wonder how fast I could get that bullet going, after deer season I might play :)

Brother in Law has a RMEF edition 700 .300 Ultra. Calls it “Cleaver”.

I was surprised at how “little” it recoils. Though I was a lot younger the last time I shot it…..

I had a rem700 xcr 300rum in a McMillan edge, had a 2-10 vortex viper. Thing was like 8#, fn brutal to get behind! These things have to be braked, my 300 norma imp is like 11# with a braked supressor it's not terrible, but still like getting punched solid in the shoulder. I don't shoot braked anymore.
