Hi all,
I bought a weatherby chambered in 300wby mag about 4 months ago. I'd like to get into long range shooting. Since then, i have only got to try a couple different bullets for it. It didn't seem to like the 150gr nosler bt's no matter what powder or charge combo, but I was loaded some 180gr round nose that managed to put 3 shots under a inch at 100 yards. I had very similar luck with the 220gr round nose bullets as well. Any ideas on bullets, or powders that might shoot well? I think if it will shoot round nose bullets that good, wouldnt you think pointed bullets would perform much better? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking

Re: 300 wby mag reloading

With that kind of powder capacity you should be looking at 185+ gr bullets for long range.

The 208 Amax is one of the best, if not THE best 30 cal bullet. The 240 SMK is good but I haven't shot them, only heresay from LOTS of guys here using them.

I use 178 Amax and 208 Amax in my 30-06. With your case capacity you can probably throw those 208's at 3100+ fps. If your rifle doesn't already have a muzzle brake you're going to want one.

Re: 300 wby mag reloading

Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply. My rifle doesn't have a muzzle break, and I do have to say the recoil is quite severe for the heavier bullets. I think I will give the a-max a run and see how they perform accuracy wise. With so many different bullets/weights/powders to choose from, it's hard to narrow it down to what would perform the best without spending tons of money. But I enjoy shooting, and I would really like to see how well my rifle will perform short and long distances. Thanks for your input

Re: 300 wby mag reloading

I really like Reloader 22 and H4350 for the middle and heavy weights in my 30-06, I don't know if the H4350 will be too fast for you, but RL-22 is well suited to the 300 Mags.

RL-22 is, like so many powders, temp sensitive so your winter days will get you less velocity then the hot summers. Keep this in mind when you're working on the drop table for your rifle, especially if you expect to take a long shot on an animal in December when you're trying to use data from August.

The .300 Wby case is large enough that the best results with 200gr + bullets will be with the slowest magnum powders like RL-25 and Retumbo. When I reloaded for the .300 Wby I used Retumbo for temp stability and easily reached 3100fps with 200gr Accubonds. Probably could have gone over 3200 if I wanted to push it. I had dreams of pushing 240gr SMKs through it and turning the gun into a long range rig, but in the end the price of the project made me abandon it.

This load works for me. Though these are pointy bullets, you may find round nosed bullets work just as well. For ranges out to 200 yards there is probably no huge advantage of BTHP bullets over flat based round nosed bullets.
