300 Win Mag, fell into a good deal

A buddy of mine got in a tight spot and decided to sell some of his rifles. He said he had a Rem 700 in 300 Win Mag. Asked what he wanted figuring he’d say $800-$1000. He said $500. Couldn’t dig my wallet out fast enough, I figure it hard to go wrong at that price. He used it for one hunting season and jumped to some other rifle in 28 Nosler and this has been in his safe since.

I’ll end up throwing away or selling everything except the action. Gonna get it a new barrel, probably heavy varmint or M24 profile, get the action worked over a bit, drop it in KRG Bravo or maybe a McMillin stock, toss a Leupold on top and search for a suppressor.

Any suggestions for a gunsmith? I was thinking to just go ahead and buy a barrel and then send the barrel and action to LRI and have them blue print the action and send back a barreled action.

Pics for proof.

Left hand action...
Other than that some factory barrels, shoot pretty good.
I bought a new on sale, Rem 700 300 WM ADL $540 out the door...just for the magnum action, decided to shoot it first...it shot really well...especially for a cheap factory rifle. Shoot it first to see if it's good enough for your purposes.
I just put it in an aluminum chassis, and machined the barrel for a muzzle brake...everything else was Remington factory..as in the photo.
But....the 300WM is now a .510 Whisper.
I like the 300WM components easily available.
I ran 3.715" cartridges out the the chassis mag, but 3.85" mags are available some chassis,... so the 300 WM will compete with all the new 300 mags in this configuration, and do so accurately and with less cost.
Max loads, 200 SMK 3280 fps, 230 gr 2964 fps out of this factory barrel.
But an excellent quality new barrel is likely to perform even better.

I’m a lefty otherwise I wouldn’t have jumped on it.

And yeah I do plan on shooting it before I change anything, except maybe the stock. It contacts the barrel almost the whole length of the stock.

I haven’t decided what the actual purpose for the rifle is yet though. Definitely a bit of an impulse purchase.

Now that I’m having some time to mess with the rifle, I’m debating calibers. If you didn’t have any magnum calibers already, not set up for reloading but planned on potentially jumping into reloading, what caliber would yall go with?

I have no issue with 300wm, but I know there’s the new hotness, 300PRC; or 7 REM Mag. Or instead, run a SA round in a LA a lá lefty M24 (I have a standard Bolt face LA bolt assembly and have another rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor so no extra calibers).

I don’t have any real planned use for the rifle outside of target shooting for now. Could maybe hunt with it in the future.

LRI does good work. They helped my win mag shoot tiny groups. Nss prefit barrels are amazing. I'd stick with the win mag. My hand loads are safe and better than 300 prc factory loads.
