300 win mag MATCH? Advantages/ Disadvantages

Re: 300 win mag MATCH? Advantages/ Disadvantages

I have shot a McMillan 300WM with A191 190gr ammo at 1000 at Quantico and Perry. I have seen many excellent shooters make very nice scores with 300WM. Even the AMU had 40Xs in 300WM. Most have since shifted over to 6.5-284, but the 300WM can still clock cleans at 1000.

Re: 300 win mag MATCH? Advantages/ Disadvantages

i have seen several place in the top 10 or less in some tactical matches.

some times matches are won at short yardage....or....what some consider barrel burning stages....

its always nice to own the long distance game....and buck the wind....but most will tell you it take some savvy to drive a .300wm and bring home the bacon....in tactical matches

Do a little searching here. Any loading manual will give you some basic background info. It's a very capable round with many uses, but maybe not a good choice for a novice shooter's first rifle to learn on. Great round though...I have a couple.

Re: 300 win mag MATCH? Advantages/ Disadvantages

thanks TC

I've always been a 308 guy and have always shrugged off the 300WM, but have recently started thinking of the extra energy down-range, wind resistance, and now i might get one to try out. I just didnt want to break down and spend 4-5k on something to try out and see what i think, therefore the price limit.

It's a very inefficient way to get the same performance you can get out of a high BC 6mm cartridge with about the same barrel life. Never the less, they are cool as sh*t and I have one that shoots like a freakin' laser beam.

+1 bsp212. I have a Winchester Custom Classic Sharpshooter in 300winmag. I bought it because it is a Custom Classic. I am also a recoil chicken, but I love this rifle. I can hammer steel at 1000 with it all day.

Re: 300 win mag MATCH? Advantages/ Disadvantages

Like stated above, the 300WM is a hammer and will hit very hard down range. But you pay the price in extra recoil, more muzzle blast, and higher cost to shoot. I shot my TRG 42 in 300WM for several years before building a custom 260 Rem. I am 100% sold on the 260 Rem. You get almost an exact duplicate of the 300WM ballistics shooting a 190 SMK with a 139 or 140 grain 6.5 bullet. And you get less recoil, less muzzle blast, and cheaper to shoot.

The main thing you give up though is the energy. Sometimes that's a good thing. I've drilled steel at long range in matches with my 300WM and it disable the target. I could also spot my hits and misses easier with a 300. But I can still see them with a 260, just takes a little more looking.

It's a great caliber and can be hand loaded for great accuracy. I have over 1700+ rounds in my TRG and it still shoots less than 1/2 MOA last time I shot it.

+1 to CHADTRG42

The 300's ability to punch threw objects is why I first chose it. It also gives me the ability to reach much farther than my .308win on UKD,...error range, for error range. Loaded with target ammo or specials it's a hard round to beat.

Re: 300 win mag MATCH? Advantages/ Disadvantages

work2shoot, I've had a few .300's and I love them, having a full custom built as we speak. The recoil definitely takes some getting use to and if not careful can create a definite flinch.

Considering the cost of a stick, optics and all the necessary equipment, the cost of ammo is small in comparison. There are some great rounds out there for the .300 and if the recoil is a major concern, a break is always an option to tame it down some.

I don't have as much experience as some but what I've had, I love the round.

Re: 300 win mag MATCH? Advantages/ Disadvantages

Mine recoils less than a comparably built .308 because of the Badger FTE brake. Muzzle blast with this brake is only bad for those around you.
