.300 Win Mag or ??? for a Savage LA Build

I have searched and searched and still decided to ask one more question!

I just received a freebie Savage LA no barrel (everything looks good on it) so here's the question:

I have two Savage .260 Rem(s)that will do everything I will probably want for quite a while. (still new to the LR game) I am not going to blow smoke up anyone's rear I really don't need anything more than that right now I am not anywhere close to 1k yards yet(though I have the room) but I am thinking of building something with the long action to give me some more range when the time comes.

.300 Win Mag is what I am thinking for the project, anything different incl. calibers you might suggest? My criteria was cost of the build, ease of reloading (something else I am new to), cost of reloading components and a cartridge that brings more to the table at more distant targets than a .260 Rem would at the same distance. Nothing fancy guys, I am spending time to learn this game, not money. At least not much money, yet.

Thanks, again!

That is an interesting article, plus it wouldn't be just another .300 WM

. Got any other cartridge suggestions, it will be used for the range and hunting. Someone had suggested 6.5-284, but I am not sure about that one. I like it but am not sure if there is a better choice, I want to be able to smack steel with authority when I work up to the distant plates. Still leaning heavily toward the .300 WM, just with a little tweak to it!

I am of the mind that out to 1200-1500 yds I can probably cover the distances with two cartridge choices , not going to go to the ELR until money is available to sink into a custom though and not until my ability is to the point where I could take advantage of it.

Re: .300 Win Mag or ??? for a Savage LA Build

I realize that the Savage has a replaceable bolt head, but is it currently a Magnum bolt face? If so, you could go with a WSM (300 or 7mm) and have all that extra action length to allow you to seat VLD bullets way out there without being constrained by short magazine boxes.

If it has a .473 bolt face, the possibilities are endless.

So, do you want/need a Magnum or just something that will make a good addition to the family?

Re: .300 Win Mag or ??? for a Savage LA Build

It is a magnum action, I don't need a magnum but the action was free and a good winter project is always fun! So it will be a useful addition to the family, I hope! .260 Rem is the best cartridge/rifle(s) combo I have for shooting accurately at distance so I want to add something that can pick up where the .260 leaves off.

I have a .257 Wby Mag I inherited so it will remain untouched (plus factory loads so I haven't shot it much)and that is the only magnum I have had any dealings with outside of my .17HMR

so this is kind of new territory since reloading is an option now.

Re: .300 Win Mag or ??? for a Savage LA Build

due keep in mind several cold hard facts.

if you intend to play this game......many UKD and LD matches may stipulate nato rounds/calibers only....the .300wm gets you in.

in a pinch a local wally world or well stocked sporting goods/outdoor/farm supply store will have on the shelf .300wm.

most all north american game can be taken with a .300wm.

... points taken. Do you know if you can you use the longer 3.65 .300 WM chamber in those same matches or is there a reg somewhere that limits the COAL.
