Apparently my google fu is taking a 3 day weekend, and I'm digging around for 300 win mag data (26" barrel preferably) at the 1 mile mark; specifically how it compares to 338LM (that data I have available). Thanks in advance!

I had a 338 that I was gearing up to take out to a mile and I sold the 338 to go to a 300wm. I looked at two different ballistic apps (shooter & Hornady) and they are similar out to a mile. I am sure that the 338 has advantages (wind and a bit of drop) but the cost of reloading 338 and how often I will be able to shoot a mile steered me in the 300wm direction. Best of luck in whichever you choose.

300 win and 215 Berger's get it done at a mile. About 16 mils roughly here at 2950 fps out of a 26 inch tube. Still supersonic also in the 1300s at that distance.

Some guys push them faster. I've seen guys shooting them from 2800 up to 3050 pending how fast the barrel is and how hard you want to work the brass.

300 Win gets it done at a mile. Especially with the good selection of bullets we have these days.

What else you looking for?

Just looking for empirical ballistics data at 1760yds if anyone's logged that. So 215gr bullet is still supersonic at 1700? If so we're talking at least 477 ft/lb energy, which might be enough for deer but not enough for say elk or larger game?

You would be mid 800s.

And if your planning to shoot game at a mile I would rethink your hunting strategy.

Your velocity at 1760 yards is 1336 from my calcs.

I ran and compared the calculation on the four ELR cartridges I shoot 7 SAUM (180-Hybrid), 300WM (215-Hybrid), 30 Nosler (230 -Hybrid), and 338LM (300 Scenar), and they all track out to 2000-yards and beyond (at 7000-ft ASL) very closely, with a small difference in just a tenth or two in wind at the extreme distances. I don't really care about the elevation, as it's just a number you dial. Obviously the bigger the bullet, the more energy on target. The 338LM, I have yet to load for it, and just shooting factory ammo since I'm sitting on a bunch. I'm sure if I can get that 300-gr bullet moving faster, it will do better.

Your 300WM will do just fine. In the end, it's just splitting hairs.

Your still supersonic through 2k yards with that bullet at that muzzle velocity. 20 mils of elevation and mid 500s of energy

You sure those #'s are right? When I run the 215 at 2950fps, it goes subsonic at 1400-1500 yards and needs 21 mils to get to a mile.... My 338LM pushing 300's at a modest 2800 goes subsonic right at a mile

I just ran a few different Cals from different apps and they are all close. But I'm at 6k feet here at the house. Not sure what your altitude is?

We have a few shooters at our 2000+ yard matches using the 215 and 230's in the 300 win mag.
I think they prefer the 215's at 2944 FPS but don't quote on that. Maybe they will chime in here.

I've shot everything from the 220 SMK through the 230 Hybrids well beyond a mile. Most of my shooting spots are below 2000' asl.
My 300WM is on its 3rd brl now & the latest one likes the 225ELD.
Here is a pic of a tgt from last summer. All hits are consecutive with .1 mil correction after getting on target. Was at 1743yds.
Not quite a mile but close enough.

Its now a 28" 1-9.5" twist with a Razor GenII on it. That TGT was using the current brl with 225 ELDM. This load is a little tamer than the 230 Hybrid that my last brl liked. It launches the 225's @ 2810fps. I can easily push them to a bit over 2900 but it wasn't as accurate.

This is pretty old and written for the 230 hybrid. There are more bullets out these days that give similar results. It used 24" barrels and 1300 yards for the comparison, but it makes the point that the 300wm loaded long with 230 Hybrids has similar hit percentages to the 338 Lapua.

I won the first URSA match and scored the first shooter point for 5/10 hits on a 37" round gong at 2050 yards with a 300wm shooting 230 hybrids, so this is more than a theoretical argument for me. Last fall, we had a buddy go 5/10 at 2200 yards on a 32"x 36" target with a similar setup on his first run at that distance.

I believe my buddy is shooting 230s out of his 300wm. Cant comment on velocity. But he was keeping up very nicely at 1886yds. We had very similar dope I was pushing a 300grn Berger out of a 338.

Sounds very similar. I’m running the 225 with 74.2gr H1000 getting right about 2800fps out of a 26” Bartlein. Very accurate. I just haven’t had the opportunity to run it that far out yet. Just for giggles, what drops are you getting at 800, 1000, and 1700yds?

Me: (MOA)

800yds 17.8
1000yd 25.1
1700yd 61.1 @ 1240fps

I’ve had this out to 1K and verified. Just not beyond.

Looks like our numbers are pretty damn close. I just took a quick look at the phone data when I posted. It’s prolly 0’ or 1000’ DA numbers.

Oh yea, Norma brass and .010 off the lands.

Anyone have any experience with Siera 230s? They have an advertised BC of .8

Through my research over the last week or so i think they can be pushed somewhere around 2810fps from a 26” 300PRC barrel. If this is the case they will be supersonic right up to 2000yds.
