I am looking to upgrade from my Rem .308 to a 300 win. I've noticed there are many different platforms to start with and many different customized 300's. I will be looking to trade my LMT AR for one.
What would be a good choice to start with but something I will be happy with? I want a solid long range rifle that I can depend on and not have to worry about.

Any feed back from Hide is appreciated!

Re: 300 win reccomendation?

remington 700 police comes in 300winmag. I put a leupold Mark 4 ERT M5 TMR on it. It shoots half MOA consistently with handloads. And shoots 1 MOA with factory ammo. I just a white tailed deer with it last friday from 150yrds. Its a tack driver.

Re: 300 win reccomendation?

The 700 Police 300winmag comes with a 1:10 twist rate. Desired twist rate will depend on what loads you plan on shooting. For hunting I use 168 grain Barnes Triple Shock with IMR 4350 powder. The 1:10 twist rate will spin light bullets like this pretty fast. With a 1:10 you have to be careful shooting lighter bullets...as there is potential to over spin them and lose accuracy. But I only hunt within 300yrds. For long distance target shooting I use much heaver bullets, ie 180-220 grains. The faster 1:10 twist helps spin these heaver loads and keep them stable at the longer distances. So decide on what you plan to do with the rifle first, and go from there.

Re: 300 win reccomendation?

What is your budget for it? Any particular features that it must have? I think the key thing to do is to come up with a lists of items that you want to include in the gun and then a things that you don't want so that you have some idea of what you are looking for. In general, a 1:10" twist is recommended.

BTW, I have one for sale if you are interested. It's a GAP 300 WM

Very good Gentlemen, all that everyone has said helps a lot. I just want a good setup with a Mark4 or NF optics. By no means a fancy bench queen, because I'll be out in the sticks with it!
