300 WM pet loads (update #2)

Could I ask a favor from you guys who shoot a 300 WM, mine comes in tomorrow and I have some Berger 220 and 230 grain hybrids to test and H1000 along with IMR 7828 and RL 22
I'd like to see what are you guys pet loads you're using with the bullet and powder combos. I'm just looking mainly for base line stuff and I'll figure it out from there.

I don't have any info on the bullets you mentioned but I do load the 215 Hybrids and it likes them at 78gr of H1000 lit with Fed 215Ms and seated 0.050" off the lands.

Thanks plowboy I do have the 215 as well so far I'm at 75.5 grns seated on the lands next jump it liked was . 08 off so I'm going back and testing at -. 07,. 08, &. 09 and see if there's another sweet spot with the 230 match Hybrid

My pet load is Winchester mil cases, Fed215M, IMR 7828 68.0 grains, Sierra 240 seated 0.015 off the lands. I get 2675 fps. Fits the magazine, shoots 1/2 moa groups. Hits hard. That's good enough for me. I am looking JLK bullets - maybe.

Well,

I've been to range on and off now for a week trying the Berger 230 grain match hybrids and h-1000 with F215m primers. I've shot various loads from 72.0 grains to 76grains and what showed to be promising at 75.5 grains I began working with seating depths from + .010 - -.120 with right on lands showing promise and -.080 showing promise. Then I go back to re verify these seating depths and the dang groups are all over the paper. At 300 yards one time I can shoot sub 1" and next go around its shooting 2-3"

So either the rifle doesn't like the 230 match hybrids or it don't like H-1000 I just got in some OTM 230 grain hybrids but not sure if I should work with those or the 215 hybrids or change powder to either IMR 7828 or RL-22 the brass used is Lapua so what would you guys test next bullets or powder?

Try the 208 A-Max. I've had amazing luck with H1000 and that round.

Got three boxes in of the 208 Amax so I'm gonna be testing them at .005 off lands with starting load at 76.0 grains going up .5 grains to 77.5. I have them also coated with Boron Nitrate or Hbn

So hopefully I'll show some sort of promising results tomorrow.

Have good luck with 190 Berger vld with 74gr RL22 and 230 hybrids with 72.5gr H1000. My rifle was built by your new neighbor Greg Young @ Southern Precision Rifles.

Made it to the range today and tested again the rifle with first Berger 230 match hybrid, they were all over the place and I'm confident they just don't work well in a 10 twist barrel or at minimum marginal for the 300 WM another shooter there this morning had same results in his 300 WM as well with same bullet and the 10 twist.
Next up was the 215 berger match hybrid at 76.5 grains it shot a group under 3/4" at 300 yards I don't remember seating depth and same charge with seating depth .010 shorter than original it shot under 1.5" at 300

Now onto the 230 grain OTM hybrids I loaded up rounds starting at 74.0 grains of H1000 and went up to 75.5 grains in .5 grain increments and only one group shot well and that was 75 grains.

Next on the list are the 208 grain Amax I started them at .005 off lands and charge started at 76.0 grains and went to 77.5 grains in .5 grain increments and all groups were consistent with best group at 76.0 then 76.5 and then last the 77.5 grains. These groups were at 5/8" at 300 yards.
I've seated the Amax down another .005 and will go back in the morning and retest same load charges as today and bump it up to next level and end at 78.0 grains of the H1000 and see if they are repeatable.

Thus far it appears the rifle or the barrel just don't like the heavies so I may stick with the 208 Amax if they prove out tomorrow to be as consistent as today

Try the 190 Berger. They generally shoot good in about all 300WM.

I built a .300 win mag with a 30" Broughton 5c. Had it throated long for the 215 and 230 grain bergers. My go to load for 1500 yard shooting is 77.7 grains of H1000 15/1000"s off the lands. Runs about 3015 fps. Also found another GREAT load with 78.1 Retumbo.

For the. 230 OTM , I'm running 76.3 Retumbo at 2890 fps at mag length (3.615) last year.. Shot a doe at 660 yards with the OTM and HOLY COW! She got hammered!! Never knew what hit her. And it literally flipped her over.

On the 230 Berger hybrids , I've found they are a little harder to tune but am rocking them at 2935 fps with 76.3 Retumbo also.

I shot this during load work up but needed a bit more speed.


Also this is about average for the 230 hybrid

I'm new to this whole field, but i was under the impression that you only wanted to run h1000 with bullets up to 210gr and anything heavier the slightly slower burning retumbo preformed better

H1000 will shoot any heavy bullet out of the win mag. Some rifles jut prefer different powders. Retumbo ,however, does work fantastic out of mine.

300 WM pet loads (update #2)

Well I made it out to the range again today, this time with some very promising results. As I had thought I was trying to push the bullets just too hard. So I backed my loads back down to 74.0 grains of H1000 and worked them back up in .5 grains

The bullets I tested today were the Hornady 208 Amax and the Berger 230 grain OTM Hybrids.

Below are pictures of today's results and all groups were shot at 300 yards. Temps today were in the low 80's with winds gusting up to 12 mph and steady of around 5-8 mph. Although some may disagree but all groups with exception of 1 group, the rest are 3 shots.
The group sizes are posted with the pics and also load date and bullet length measured off the ogive.
