I have recently started a 300win mag build for LR shooting and I need a little help.

1. What barrel length should I go with. My barrel is currently 28in and needs to be cut down and threaded. From most of what i've seen lately and read everyone is saying the shorter and stiffer the better because of harmonics.

2. Does anyone suggest a specific break for this caliber on a bolt gun?

Looking for any suggestions and thanks in the future for any help given.

Re: 300win mag barrel help and break.....

Many people go with a 26" barrel and a 1/10 twist. The faster twist stabilizes the heavier bullets suitable for .300 WM, and a longer barrel gives time to completely consume all of the slow burning powder.

Re: 300win mag barrel help and break.....

I'v only used 26" barrels for 300Win Mag....so that's what I would go with. I've used the NEAR muzzle break for the trg42 and it worked great. Also Heard good things about the FTE break and the little bastard.

I have only used 26" barrels on my 300's. I would also go with a side discharge brake, the first time you shoot prone in dirt you will know why.

Re: 300win mag barrel help and break.....

It really depends on if you reload and the powder burn rate. If you use factory ammo, you can get away with a 22-24" barrel without too much velocity loss. If you are loading hot and with slow burning powder, you don't care about a slightly more cumbersome rifle, than go longer. I personally would go with a 24" as a good compromise.

I would go 26" plus, depending on how the rifle is going to be used. I have the FTE on my .338 and it is .243 level recoil.

Re: 300win mag barrel help and break.....

I have been very impressed with my Sako at 27.125" barrel length...I would think that there was a significant amount of engineering that went into that prescribed length.

I currently have the JP Bennie Cooley brake and it works well, but would have perhaps a preference to the APA Bastard series for brakes which I have on a couple rifles. IMHO, the recoil reduction is similar, but the Bastards are better at keeping the back blast off the shooter.

and to the poster above, (BobLSwagger)...that is an aesthetically and functionally perfect rifle!

sexy looking rig Swagger, may i ask who built it? and a little more info on the gun I.E. barrel specs if you dont mind? (taper, manufacture, twist) speed on thoes loads? im impressed with the grouping of thoes heavy bullets at such a short range.

Thanks

Re: 300win mag barrel help and break.....

Thanks for the compliments fellas.. Here is the link to the build down at Robert Gradous' shop.

The only change in spec are:

I switched Leupold rings for NF rings, added a holland anti-cant level and swapped out the harris bipod for an atlas bipod.

The pics of those groups where taken while I was working up loads for the rifle. The furthest I had an opportunity to try them was 600 yards and they were excellent at that range also. Unfortunately I forgot to bring my camera last time I shot at 600. Hopefully I'll get to shoot out to 1200 yards on my next days off.
