I am thinking of trying to use cheaper alternative to .308 FGMM when doing positional/barricade steel practice.
Have others done it? What make/model of ammo in .308 worked well?

Thanks!

If you’re just wanting to practice building the position, pulling the trigger, and managing the recoil then any brands “match” line would work okay. But if it works for practice it should work in the game, right?

You’re best bet may be to continue to use FGMM for practice so you know if you’ve missed or hit that it was you and not the ammo. If you aren’t getting good feedback from your practice then you may not progress the way you want to. You set up, feel stable, have everything lined up. Good trigger control and breathing, but the shot misses. Why did it miss? Did you flinch or was it sub par ammo? What can you learn from that shot?

You may get to shoot a little more but it may only save you $4-5/100 rounds and you may not get the training like you had hoped.

Look on ammoseek.com to find the best price. I know Palmetto State Armory will have it for about $16-17 per box pretty often.

When I get my AT, I plan on using 178 ELD-M as my match bullet. That will cost me an estimated $0.54 per shot (not including brass). For practice, I’m looking at this:
http://www.evergladesammo.com/30cal-150gr-fmj-bullets.html or any other FMJ bullet.

I figure if I can get the practice ammo to shoot 1-1.5 MOA, that’ll suffice for most competition targets within 700 yards. Most targets seem to be in the 2-3.5 MOA range at any given distance. Practice ammo should be about $0.38 per shot not including brass.

My 308 practice ammo is my match ammo. My reloaded ammo cost is so low compared to factory match ammo that I see no reason to settle for less than the best accuracy and performance when practicing/training.

I tend to do most of my positional practice at 100 yards on reduced targets anyway, and for that I have a duplicate of my main rifle in 223. I'll shoot the 308 in positional practice at 100 occasionally only to confirm my techniques will stand up to recoil.
