I have the urge to get a 308 upper.

I’ve got a Psa 6.5 20” rifle. I’ve also got a 24” dpms gen1 bull barrel rifle. I’m sitting on a pile of 168 ELDs and 175 SMKs.

I’ve got access to several really nice ranges. I plan you shoot suppressed.

What do you guys recommend?

18" or 20" barrel is what seems to be the sweet spot (IMO). My LFAR is a .308 with an 18" barrel and rifle length gas. After a bit of work to get it all dialed in, the rifle now runs like a dream. I had some 'older' ammo that I felt like chew up...so I loaded up a bunch of mags (7 total) and did a mag dump.

Rifle barrel was definitely hot by the end, but the rifle ran hard and put hurt on the targets I was aiming for (lol). Wish I was set up to reload as there was a crap-ton of brass I had to sweep up and just give away to the range (good peeps anyway).

You are looking for a .308 to shoot to a mile?
No.

I was asked what targets and distances I have access to at my ranges.

I’m looking for a 308 AR upper that could work with either a PSA lower or a gen1 DPMS lower. I’m hoping to shoot suppressed.

I was wondering about 16”. 18”, or 20”. What about mid-length vs rifle length gas? Is adjustable gas the best option?

I don’t expect to shoot beyond supersonic range. I’m thinking DMR style upper.

Are there any opinions on those criteria?

I have a 24” rifle length gas, bull barreled lr308 and a 16” mig length gas med weight (0.75” gas journal) lr308. Both fit specific roles. They overlap, but only a little. I would recommend both, either, or neither based on the goals, but there’s not a lot to go on in the first post.

As far as the PSA lower.... they only can use PSA uppers. Proprietary parts.. lack of a MilSpec guideline for LFAR's...etc.

FWIW, most all 308/6.5CM LFAR barrels tend to be over gassed, so plan on using a Adj. GB.

I would suggest buying a complete PSA upper, trying it out, and then if needed / desired swap in a more precision oriented barrel.
Lap the upper reciever face , and shim / Loctite the new barrel in place.
I have had very good results with Criterion barrels.
