Here's goes first post...................There is a grass airport runway available for shooting.
When shooting a 308 at 1000 yards on the level field, will the bullet have enough energy to ricochet?
The airplane guys rejected building a berm.

Would the airplane guys be opposed to stacking up old tires to use as a berm (possibly filling the stack with sand)? Assuming you can find some old tires to use.

I think the pilot's concern is not tearing up their landing gear in the event of either human error or mechanical failure on take off and not so much on esthetics.

What's behind or around your target? If there is nothing for hundreds and hundreds of yards beyond it or to the sides of the shooting corridor, then don't worry about a richochet past the target. Besides a .308 bullet at 1000 yds is coming down like an artillery shell from the heavens, its not skimming over the ground at a few inches and impacting at a shallow angle.

OTOH, if there is anything around the field (I would assume airplanes and such), I just can't imagine shooting there unless there was a good berm around the target. Bullets do very unpredictable things when they hit stuff like rocks, roots, etc. My gut says unless the airstrip is completely deserted and its literally in the middle of BFE with nothing around for miles - then it might not be the best place to shoot without a good backstop.
