.308 Brass, best of the commonly found types?

+1

If the measure is number of reloads, of the types you listed, I personally have, in the past, gotten the most "quality" reloads out of Hornady brass. I have gotten good use out of Federal and Winchester, but it seems softer and offers fewer reloads. I cannot comment on the other types listed.

I almost exclusively use Lapua brass now and get much better use.

Re: .308 Brass, best of the commonly found types?

To me, commercial Winchester is the best because of its case capacity. I even went so far as to trade off my Lapua brass to go Winchester only.

Re: .308 Brass, best of the commonly found types?

I'm looking for overall combination of best accuracy/reload life.

Is the once fired military .308 brass good for reloading accurate loads? I realize it will require primer pocket swaging. I've read you need to reduce your loads in military brass due to thickness. I've also read that machine gun fired brass can be a pain to work with. Comments?

I'm beginning to realize the importance of using uniform brass for consistency and accuracy. I was planning on moving to one brand of brass only.

there you go....there is your answer

Re: .308 Brass, best of the commonly found types?

Lapua, then Winchester/Hornady, then everybody else....

Haven't tried Norma but have heard it's good. Just too expensive!

Re: .308 Brass, best of the commonly found types?

On a related note, I have some silver (nickle-plated I assume) Hornady brass from some TAP factory ammo. Is that stuff reloadable or should I just chuck it?

Re: .308 Brass, best of the commonly found types?

It all mostly works well. FGGM is softer, but the prices are right, and, if you keep it within the original pressure and velocity issues, it will give good life. Keeping it to the factory pressures and velocities I get 6 to 10 reloadings. If you want to burn it out, then Winchester will get you a few more...but at a higher cost and less return on your investment. If you want .30-06 velocities...get you an 06. If you want long life on barrels and brass, stick to what Federal has proven to be a great load. JMHO

Re: .308 Brass, best of the commonly found types?

my question is just what are you going to do with the brass other than load your own loads.if your just loading to get a better load that factory can give,I would just load with what you have.but on the other hand get Lapua or something of bench loading quality. It all boils down to how deep your pocket is and what you intend on doing with the loads that you work up.for me it started out with getting a better hunting load.now I want to shot one ragged hole.so I went from what I had from buying ammo too buying Lapua.but I still get rem brass for hunting.no need to spend money if you don't need to.as you already know reloading can get cost ya,not olny some stuff is hard to get.John

I would vote Hornady first then Winchester commercial second. I prefer Lapua, but can't go wrong with either Hornady or Winchester commercial.

Re: .308 Brass, best of the commonly found types?

Boomfab,Did not see a answer to your question about surplus brass, so heres mine!It depends on what it was shot in,and you probably will not know.If it was fired in an automatic weapon, it may be hard to size and case life may suffer.Unless it is headstamped "Match", it will have a crimped primer. It will probably be heavier than commercial brass, with less capacity. It used to be dirt cheap and i've shot lots of it.Sometimes you find a bargin. Personaly,I like Lapua and Norma in my boltguns and Winchester in my M1-A.Good Luck Pete

Re: .308 Brass, best of the commonly found types?

Lake City in 223/5.56
Winchester in 308

Best == most cost effective. LC because it is range pick up (and good), Winchester because its good and (on the large scheme of things) inexpensive.

Re: .308 Brass, best of the commonly found types?

Nosler is great! Lapua is great great! I have some once fired black hills match brass that I'm working with and it is not to bad. I also use lots of FGGM brass that is pretty good! I even have some IMI that I loaded for a hunting ap and it works well. But as far as the Nosler custom brass, it is easy to work with but I don't know what kind of use time it has. I'm on my first hundred!

Re: .308 Brass, best of the commonly found types?

Many of my best results (groups at all distances) have been with Hornady brass. I have more Lapua than anything.

Re: .308 Brass, best of the commonly found types?

I won't comment on others as I'm just starting to work with .308 reloads. My little experience tells me that Winchester is excellent as far as being consistent as all my casings are extremely close in their weight.

Re: .308 Brass, best of the commonly found types?

I can't comment on the high-end brass, but I would like to talk about MG fired and match (not MG fired) Lake City .308 brass. I have and use both as well as Winchester brass. I purchased a large lot of MG fired LC brass. When I FL resized this stuff, it felt like I was necking it down to another caliber. I thought the necks were splitting as I resized them. I annealed them, before continuing the reloading process. I felt the need to anneal my Winchester brass after the 7th firing. The LC MG brass felt much worse. The match LC, on the other hand, felt just like any other commercial brass. Also, the primers were not crimped as the M80 brass was. I have not fired all the LC brass yet, but it seems to be holding up fine. I thought the necks would split on the MG fired stuff after the first firing. It was that bad. Also, I had to reduce the load from the Winchester levels. It was similar to going from Win to Fed brass. I would rate the Fed stuff at the bottom. On the second reload, the primer pockets were loose enough to cause concern. I would rate the win at the top, although I have never used the expensive stuff.

I FL resize all my brass, trim, inside/outside chamfer, uniform flash hole and primer pockets. Fired in a factory 700p chamber.

Re: .308 Brass, best of the commonly found types?

I have had many more LC and LC Match cases get stuck in the FL size dies than all other manufactures brass combined. I am not sure why but sure puts a "cripm" on the reloading process
