I'm quite new to reloading .308 Win and struggeling with C.O.L. Should I jump or jamb??? My initial load has been 44.0gr Varget with Hornady 165gr Interbond at C.O.L. of 2.785 and a light crimp via Lee Factory Crimp Die, but I'm getting miserable groups of 4" at 200yds. I don't have a stoney point gauge but I've heard of using black marker or candle smoke to help find rifleing marks on a chambered round. I'm sure that there has got to be someone else out there reloading for this gun who has already worked though the pains of working up first loads. Any help is much appreaciated. I've been reloading 5.56 ammo for ARs for years but this is my first Big Boy Bolt Gun.

I'll lose the crimp and give it a try. I have been under the impression that a light crimp contributes to consistant chamber pressure, any thoughts on that???

I have a 700 with 20" LTR barrel and get .5" groups at 100 with 2.85" COAL. I have shot loads that were 2.9" and they shot well also but forget about using the internal magazine. No crimp 168gr SMK IMR 4064.

Consistent neck tension is what you're looking for in any case, crimp or not. Don't forget to try different bullets intended for the type of shooting and accuracy you want to achieve. Several brands of match bullets can also be used for hunting if that's what you're loading for.

308sako- What was your process for working from 3.005 back down to 2.870? what were group size diferances before you locked in at 2.870? please expound.

The max COAL in my SPS internal magazine is 2.820". Which means some variation around that mean average length. So they may get as long as 2.830" and still fit in the mag and feed.

Those Michigan deer must be some wily critters if you need to take them at 400-600 yards.
