I started reloading some 308 today and found with 41.2-41.4 grains of 4064, the case is almost full. I am using lapua brass but tried the same with a federal case and got the same results. Is this just the nature of the 4064 powder and how it is extruded size wise or something else I am completely missing? I read in the reloading depot some members going to 44grs but don't see how this could work. Any help/insight is much appreciated. The 41.3 shot .375" at 100 but am just curious

Have you tried a drop tube followed by tapping the base a time or two...?

My M1A/M14 pretty definite 1Kyd supersoninc load for 175SMK's was 42.2gr of IMR-4064 in Rem brass, and I (and Sierra) considered it a max load.

Haven't tried the drop tube but did tap the base of the case to get it to settle. I'm certainly not complaining as accuracy was dead on and am very happy. Just curious how guys are packing cases with 44grs of 4064. Thanks for the reply

Re: 308 case capacity with IMR4064

your about right. i load with 4064 as i have lots of it. in a 22" barrel:

with a 110 vmax 43 gr and an oal of 2.710 is giving me 2701 fps in pmc brass and 2688 fps in remington brass. the powder is just about getting compressed in pmc brass.

with 165 gr sst and 42 grains of 4064 and an oal of 2.760 i'm gettin 2614 fps in pmc brass and 2593 in remington brass, and it's almost getting compressed in pmc brass.

all my cases are trimmed to 2.010

the primer pocket on the pmc is a little deeper or thicker, which in turn takes up space where powder goes, which seems to gives you the fps increase but also (i imagine) a pressure increase.

if i use remington / winchester brass, i can squeeze in a bit more powder. however it seems to be the most accurate charge for either types of brasses, being sub moa out to 550 yards. through my savage, it seems that the slower and heavier the bullet is it gets more accurate.

Using Winchester brass and a 4" drop tube I get a little crunch when seating 185 Bergers at 2.83 "over 42-43 grains of 4064.
Loading for my LTR with a 175 to touch the lands(3+") I loaded 44.5 =/- grains using the same funnel and tube.
