Range Report .308 Federal Gold Match

Will the 168grain be enough out to 1000 yards for F-Class shooting or do I need to use 175grain?

I am using the Savage 12 F/TR (believe 1:12 twist) with bipod and rear bag.

Also, I used the 168grain this last Sunday at 600 yards in 25-40mph winds with gust up to 55mph and was surprised how well it held up.

175. The 168's drop through the sound barrier in the 800 yard plus region and become erratic. Been there and done that.

I shot a match on Sunday here in Michigan with similar conditions. My 180smks weren't holding up so great... what a horrible day! I think the 175s are the ticket, they have a considerably better BC than the 168.

Is this equally true for all 168s or just the SMKs? I ask the question not because I know the answer, but because I've been told by a marine sniper instructor (retired) that others such as Nosler and Berger don't have the de-stabilization problems as they become subsonic.

Yes its a 1-12 but I would shoot the 175 SMK's for 1000 yards. My Remington 700 SPS Tac also has a 1-12 and it does great with 175's. Its all I actually use in my rifle.

Just the SMKs. Their boatail angle is much steeper than other 30 cal projos. It does weird things to bullet stability in the transonic region. Inside 600 yards you are fine.

You may even want to take a look at the 178gr Hornady BTHP. BC is advertised as .530
