Hey there, hopefully you guys can help me. I recently bought a McMillan a5 stock for my Remington 700 .308that’s cut for a mtu barrel. Now that I have the stock on the factory barreled action (sps varmint) it looks kinda goofy being so small. I’ve recently looked at getting a new barrel for it and debating between a krieger m24 or waiting to try and find an actual mtu in stock somewhere. I can get the m24 shipped to me today but not sure if it would also look really small in the mtu cut stock. Any info or help on this from anyone?

When I wanted to buy a 308, 10-twist MTU for my AXMC (large shank), there were none to be found. Dave Tooley was able to get one from Bartlein in half the time I was quoted by Bartlein.

Dimensionally, they are close, so it should look fine. The weight is a bit different. I think the MTU is 1-1.25 pounds heavier than the M24.

I went ahead and ordered the m24 Krieger. Hope I like it haha

Depends on the rifle, IMHO. I run M24s and MTUs on my AI rifles, and they are not front-heavy.

I do agree that they are heavier overall, but I don't find that to be a problem.
I agree with this. I've found no noticable change in balance between M24 and MTU barrels. While the weight is different it's different centered over the balance point of my rifle anyways so it doesn't affect the balance.

This spring I replaced an M24 barrel. Somewhere along the way I had a brain fart and ordered an MTU. When it came I thought dang this this seems heavier? When I put it on the rifle I thought MAN this IS heavier now!
I almost started a thread asking if it was common for certain company's contours to vary from the norm. About then I realized what I'd done. Not a big deal in reality, but it is noticeably heavier.

Do you think the m24 is enough wait to where you can see your misses with recoil?

It should be if you are running the rifle right and have it set up correctly. I have a 28” M24 on my .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor now. The MTU will be heavier though. Either is better than a factory barrel.

This is my Creedmoor but my .308 looks just like it but a different scope.

Did you notice a big difference in the contour or how it looked? I’m guessing you had an m24 cut stock so the fact an mtu fit in it is a good sign I guess haha

Which company makes that barrel? Looks almost like a straight taper haha looks good though

Through circumstance I never had them side by side till months later, so I couldn't compare them. When I was finally able was when I realized one or both barrels couldn't be that far off spec. Someone must have screwed up. That someone was me.

It's in a metal chassis so there's still lots of room.

Definitely not a straight. Lol That’s a Bartlein barrel. I have some PVA Osprey proof Comp Contour barrels that are heavier than that. They are a little heavier than the MTU which is a little heavier than the M24.

Anymore, I'm a real big fan of med and hvy palma. The mtu/comp contours are great for bench guns and gamer guns, but to get balance right, requires adding weight to rear of gun, and I'm not big on 20+lb rifles. My 7prc is close, bought very lightly used here, cdg+a5+pva 26"m24+razor 2= a pig(18.25lb).

Not in my rifles. I don’t add anything to the rear and usually some to front.

I guess it depends on stock and where balance point is wanted. I'm not crazy about crazy heavy rifles, not a prs shooter, and will use all my rifles in the field. Ive walked miles in snow with a 14lb bolt gun, not gonna do that with a 22lb rifle.

Yeah if you are humping through the snow and mountains I would doubt you would have either of the discussed contours. If he wanted a light rifle he should be looking at some different contours for sure.

The balance point is infront of the magazine in the first few inches of Arca. I have had my barreled actions in Manners stocks, McMillan and MPA and never felt a need to add weight to the rear on any of them and actually lightened some.

My barrels were in 6 Dasher so both were plenty adequate for felt recoil. I actually didn't notice a real difference in felt recoil but I did feel the weight difference when carrying the rifle. Recoil management might be a different story with a 308 though.

I’ll be shooting with a fan as well so hopefully between a heavier barrel and the can it’ll be minimal.
