Hello. Newby here been lurking for a while. I have gotten a ton of info from this board. I am assigned to a a Police tact team in MD. Now the question, we are looking for a 308 platform in a gas gun configuration. We currently run bone stock 700VS. They are accurate enough, but the are a pian to deploy out of our Bearcat and looking for something a little faster to cover hallways in school/malls and little more firepower for woodland movements. Our Terrain goes from Urban to BFE in one call out LOL

Looking for the most bang for the buck on a production gun. Looking at the Rock River right now. DPMS dropped there T and E program. We run Federal 168 Gold medal ammo. looking for MOA or less out of the box. Anybody got any suggestions. I am will be building my own full custom rig for shoots on the weekends. They are out of the question for our budget Any help or direction would be appreciated.

Re: 308 platform questions

Any plans to run suppressed?

When you say schools/malls I presume you would be replacing the role that the 700VS plays with a .308 gas gun and not actually intending to use it as a cqb type weapon.

Re: 308 platform questions

depends on how much your department is going to fork out because I think I would look seriously at a POF POF 308

I have a DPMS AP4 in 308 and it is in the size of a M4 with the punch of a 308. I have fired it to 500 yards thus far with good results. The point being that a 16" inch barrel will fit your bill for a short 308.

Re: 308 platform questions

Well suppresors are not out of the question. Our entry guys run Sig 556s with 10.5 barrels that are obsecene with report and concussion. Cans are on order for those. These will be used to compliment the bolt guns. We will be useing them as gitty up and go guns. Everything from a hard entry on drug warrants to a precison shots rollin out of a cruiser and spotter guns also doing double duty in place of the bolt gun on barricades. Probably running an ACOG or a Leupold CQB scopes for optics. I know I have a tall order.

We like the SOCOM but they are heavy and not sure if we can get the accuracy out of them. We were looking at the DPMS but they have dropped alot of LEO support and are using dealers for that now. So now open to suggestions

Re: 308 platform questions

POF and LMT seem to offer the most bang for buck. POF I beleive would be better suited for supressed use due to the piston and the LMT offers barrel changes in less than a min.

Both are about 2500.00 not sure where that figures into your departments budget.

Re: 308 platform questions

POF .308's are definitely hi-speed - my partner has a 16" one and it is sub-MOA and reliable. He was just banging steel with it at 800yds the other day no problem.

One suggestion, contact FN and see if you can get your hands on a short barreled SCAR-H. I shot a prototype years ago and it is good to go. I don't know how there LE pricing is but they have become very LE friendly lately and its worth a look.

Let us know how you make out.........

Re: 308 platform questions

HK 417 might also be worth taking a look at but I don't know if the worked the all kinks out yet in the system - the polymer mags suck and at my last HK armorer school, the instructor stated that HK will only guarantee 1.5 MOA accuracy out of them.........

Re: 308 platform questions

The HK417's are very reliable but their accuracy sucks. If you want a piston gun, go with the POF.

Re: 308 platform questions

"They are out of the question for our budget Any help or direction would be appreciated."

What kind of budget are we talking? You mentioned the ACOG, I love that optic but it will set you back 800-1200 depending on which one you want. That plus a POF 16.5 and 4000 isn't out of the question. The DPMS 16" might be an idea, but if you want to mount anything special on it you'll need to have a 4 railed handguard put on it (not that big of a deal but something to consider if you want an out-of-the-box rifle). That would give you a 16" that's fairly accurate, not very large, and you'd be able to mount whatever you wanted on it but I don't know about running a suppressor on one, I hear the DI guns get pretty dirty. Only suppressed weapon I've ever used was a pistol so I don't know.

Re: 308 platform questions

Have you seen the FNH SCAR?

The 17S should be out any day now, I'm seriously considering that one myself.

It's going to be very versatile, it seems it would do well in different theaters, urban and country.

Supposedly there´s going to be a sniper model as well, with heavy barrel and tripod. That rifle did quite well in a 60.000 round test for SPECOPS, just google it for more details.
List price is going to be around 2.400$ so it's not cheap but considering FNH's quality and reliability I believe you get what you pay for.

When the SCAR 16S (5.56mm) reached the civilian market prices were inflated all the way up to three grand and it may well be that the same happens this time around. It might be better to wait a few months if that's the case again.

Unless you're in a hurry of course. I like the HK 417 as well, expensive and hard to find also. Damn my expensive tastes!

Re: 308 platform questions

FNAR will fill all your needs for around $1600 I like the heavy barrel model. M.O.A or better out of the box. Just add optics.

Re: 308 platform questions

FN Scar Heavy -
POF 308
LWRC REPR
DPMS LAR 308
LaRue OBR

I like the POF and the REPR, only because those are what I have shot. The gas piston is nice for keeping the rifles clean and limiting the recoil.. Good luck in your search!

Limiting recoil? How does it do that?

Re: 308 platform questions

POF uses rock barrels. I used my POF308 yesterday to put 4 into 2.6" and 5 into 4.1" at 550 yards.(after 1 sighter to get on steel). This was out the window of my truck.

Re: 308 platform questions

Washington County. Live in Franklin County PA. Searching for a grant right now or a manufacturer that will take some seized guns as partail or full trade. Thanks for all the info. If I was looking at one for personel use I would be looking towards the POF or a Noveske on an Armilite lower. Rock river's LAR 8 is coming in at around 1100 set up pretty well. Government price. Specs say 1.5moa Lady on the phone assured me sub minute. Got an email in for T and E. Gonna save the info for a future build of my own.

Re: 308 platform questions

I have a LAR-8A4 it's shooting .5-.75 at 100. It has the Rock River Operator free float tube. It's good option. LWRC is very LEO friendly and since it's in Cambridge MD on the eastern shore they offered me a tour(DEA) to see their operations. We are authorized to purchase their M6 carbine.

One thing you need to consider is magazines. The DPMS/LWRC uses the SR-25/M110 DPMS format. The LAR-8 uses the FN FAL magazine.

Just a thought the M14 is still a great option.

Yes I must agree, I dont see how gas pistons limit recoil... the piston guns seem to have more movement VS direct impingement. Meaning more "recoil".

Re: 308 platform questions

I have a rra lar-8 in the a4 configuration I paid 1050.00 out the door I would hope leo would get a better price. I put a mag-pul prs stock on mine along with a cheesy handguard . after dragging it through the woods I decided to go back to the original a4 configuration. it would not be my first choice for kicking doors simply because it is to long with a 20 inch barrel . I will say it is 100 percent reliable and extremely accurate . I have not had any problems locating fn-fal mags and no feed problems . check out there middy operator model.
