Hey all. wonder if anyone can suggest a more budget friendly powder for bulk purchase ( 5 or 8lb cans ) for just plinking..
im working up some loads ( relatively new to rifle reloading) with the standard 175smk's and varget and 4895..
but...
i was wondering .. if i wanted to buy some bulk pulled 147gr fmj bullets for hacking around.. might there be a suitable more affordable powder anyone uses when they arent shooting for real accuracy and just getting some fun trigger time in..

thanks
kc

Re: 308 Plinking powder

I haven't seen that dramatic of price differences in powder, but AK is a bit different. Varget is my go to, R15 is almost interchangeable, TAC hasn't been quite as good for me, +1/4-1/2 MOA, it is a little lower priced and meters as good as anything can, which is nice for high volume with consistency. Good luck

Re: 308 Plinking powder

Pat's reloading sells wc846 which is said to be very barrel life friendly. I have read that the military got twice the barrel life in 223 and 308 barrels. It is supposed to burn about like blc2 but mine seems a little faster.Cost currently $94 for 8 lb.
I use 41.5 gr with a 155 smk @ about 2790 as a fun load which really shoots well. The only problem I have had is that it is hard to lite in small primer palma brass. I had consistent hangfires until I tried Rem 7 1/2 primers. It takes 43 gr in the palma brass to duplicate the 41.5 gr load with large rifle primers.
It also did very well in my Rem 700 PSS 223 using 25.9 gr with a 55 NBT.I love the stuff-cheap,accurate, and longer barrel life.
It also is a ball powder and meters well.

Hi-Tech had it for $80 at Knob Creek last weekend. You will find them to be generally a little cheaper than Pat.
