Thought i would share this with all of you, The longest shot i made before this all was 1000 yards, ive competed in F class at that range, I always wanted to try to get beyond that and i told myself if i came back to visit this place i would, This is where i grew up and learned to shoot long range, here are the results.

The rifle i was using is a Remington model 700P in a AX AICS chassis with a Nightforce 40 MOA base and Nightforce NXS 3.5-15X50 with the NP-R2 reticle, the trigger is a Rifle Basix L-1K set to 2.5 Lbs, The rounds i loaded were the 175 SMK and the Hornady 178gr BTHP in Hornady match brass, CCI BR2 primers and 43.5 grains of Varget, Both have a C.O.L of 2.800" and both are around the 2600 FPS mark judging by the DOPE

Ranges were taken with Google earth and a Rangefinder. Shooting position for every shot was on a hill that was around 900ASL and the targets were on the beach that is about 700 ASL.

Here is my Range.

there's a limit to the number of pictures you can have per post on all forums(different for each forum). to solve this simply break up such a large post into multiple posts in the future

Great info and thanks for sharing.

Could you tell if the bullets were hitting point-on at 1950 meters?</div></div>

One of the hits went in point first but others went in sideways. If i got more hits at 1650 and 1385 this probibly would have been the same case. Kinda like a knife throw, sometimes it sticks sometimes it doesnt.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

Interesting.

A few winters back I was shooting some 208 AMax from a 308 out to 1800-ish yards. MV was only 2480 fps via RL15 powder.

I was shooting from a factory Rem 1/12 barrel, and the bullets were all hitting point first. Elevation was around 4500' and that thinner air was likely helping the stability.

Very, very cool! Beautiful scenery up there.

It's neat that the bullets were tumbling, but still going where you pointed them... inertia I guess.

Great shooting, and thanks for posting!

I took a total of 5 shots of 178 gr BTHP and hit with my 5th shot. Wind was only around 2.5 with the wind comings from 15 - 30 degrees. 0.5 of windage and 42.5 minutes of elevation POA POI. hit the balloon and just missed the card off the right edge.

I took a total of 5 shots of 175 SMK and got 1 hit, 63.25 minutes of elevation and around 7 minutes of windage wind was around 5 mph - 8 mph i would hold off for the changing wind. I was happy cause i thought i hit it 5 times in a row because i could hear a thump sound but the round were going off the right side of the thing, from the top of the hill it looked like the splash was behind the target. I took 4 shots of 175 SMK and 1 shot of 178 BTHP for a total of 5 shots at this range, im pretty sure i hit it with the 4th shot and the 5th shot went way over because i used the same hold and the 178 are just ballistically superior to the 175 SMK.
maxed out my elevation at 86 minutes and held 6 minutes and windage was 8.5, wind was same as the 45 gallon drum shot cause after i was done with that one i moved on to this one. Here are some pictures of the the hit.

I took a total of 5 shots of 178 gr BTHP and hit with my 3rd shot i think haha, i say that because it was very hard to tell if it went through the target, over the target or under the target. on 10X Elevation still maxed out at 86 minutes and i was holding 12 -13 which on 10X is 36 minutes for a total of 122 minutes, i had around 10 minutes of windage but held way right to compensate for the changing wind and all the shots were very close the the target if i used a larger target i would have hit a lot more but im happy with the hit on the small target, Here is the picture of the hit.

After i had hit the 1650 target i still had over 300 meters of range left so i wanted to try it out.

Here is my target at 1950 meters or 2132 yards. Piece of plyboard 4'X8', Also angled back like the 1650 target.

I took a total of 20 shots i shot at this target after i hit the balloon at 1K,
I would shoot then move my head to the left and look through the spotting scope, i was maxed out on 86 minutes and held 11 on 3.5X which is 94.25 minutes + 86 minutes which is 180.25 minutes. I dialed in windage of 2.5 minutes. First shot was way way to the right, the splash in the water came straight up about 5' into the air it was like mini artillary or something haha.

I put my windage on Zero and send another shot couldnt see where it went so i send another one and this one was low so i held 12 ( 102.75 minute hold total of 188.75 minutes of elevation ) instead of 11 and was holding a little ways off the left edge of the board, about 1 hash mark off the left edge, i saw water rise above the board from the back of the target and i thought i hit it.

The difficult part was telling if it hit or not because a splash would come up from behind the board if i hit and it would come up if i went right over the board too which was the case, i was going right over the top of the board but i didnt know this untill i held 11 again and hit low then saw that holding 12 was a tad bit high so i held 11.5 (98.5 minutes for a total of 184.5 minutes of elevation ) I knew i hit the target cause i was so damn close everytime the right hold for me was 11.5. 20 shots down i take a ride to the board and i got 3 hits on it at 1950 meters with a .308, here are the pictures.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

Last thing I heard from a local gunsmith (that I do not use) was that 308 is not engough for a deer at 300 yards. I held my tongue just so I could listen at him mouth about needing a larger caliber.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

Great shooting........and very nice range...Now I have to try it myself with my 308 since i have only shot 338lm and 300 wm past 1700 yards

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

I like the way you "think outside the box" ... great use of the sand and sea for bullet splash ... and time of flight to swap to the spotter ...

I bet it makes the Connaught range in Ottawa seem "close range" in comparison ...

I was at your F Class Nationals there in 2006 for the International Match ... did we shoot together ?

No, only place ive shot F class is in Nokomis Saskatchewan. This year the Western F class Championships are being held there, im gonna try make it to that one, they have PGW Coyotes as the prizes.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

I'm putting a .308 together for 1000 yard F/TR. Stuff like this is a confidence builder. I've always shot a hotrod, now chompping at the bit to go to .308. Great pictures and info.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

I still think the .308 Win is an amazing caliber! While it may no longer be the cool kid on the block it holds a sweet spot in my heart. I think I'm tearing up. Thanks for the detailed post.

This is an AMAZING post! Really wish I had an opportunity to try something like this. Nice shooting!

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

Impressive. You are the .308 Mythbuster! Even more so it seems your rifle isn't really high end nor customized. And you did this without tremendous magnification. Can you expand on any customization you've done to your rifle (bedding, rechambered, trued/blueprinted action, etc.)? It appears here it is all about the shooter and good handloads.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

This should win post of the year. Well done, great pics, from every distance. Just awesome most fun I've had not shooting myself in a long time. Thats like shooting in heaven.

Only thing different about this gun and a factory Remington model 700 police is the trigger and stock.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

I am unbelievably jealous. You're a lucky guy!

Looks like you had more than luck with your shots though, I'm impressed

Not sure the exact angle, for the farther shots the angle would be less then the closer. At 1000 meters the angle was probibly between 15 and 30 degrees.

Re: .308 to 1000, 1178, 1385, 1650 and 1950 meters.

There is a place similar to this along the Oregon Coast but there is no way anyone would be able to post up and fire down to the beach. How are you able to shoot up there?
