308 vs 300 winmag , for custom rifle

ive been bangin my head over this one . i know im not tha first one. i love to shoot alot , so i like tha 308, worried about heat build up on tha 300 win mag. i got a good place to shoot we have 200ac farm i can get 1k yds from my barn to back corner, i can shoot every day if i wanna , when i get everything all set up . i like that tha 300 win is gonna still have some punch @1k , ahhhh. this just goes round and round in my head......

You could always split the difference and go 30-06.

I shoot the 308 and 300 win. Personally, I like the 308 for most of my shooting shorter than 1000. If you are spending a lot of time 1k+ go 300 for sure. With handloads, you can really get out there. The cost of brass, and barrel leads me to ONLY really shoot my 300 FAR. Otherwise it's just not worth it (to me).

You may as well just go with the magnum! If not you`ll just regret it an have second thoughts on the .308 later on.Just my thought

Not a bad compromise.

Whoda thought after all that history, the 30-06 would become the mostly forgotten bastard step-child.

I teethed on a Springfield '03 and an M1 Garand.

I have a 300 WM now, but I certainly don't *need* it. The 30-06 would get you to a 1000 yds. just fine (Read MM's thread on 30-06 w/208 Amax & RL17 )

He's getting close to 300WM velocities w/208 Amax with about 30% less powder.

Why not get a .260? You get .300WM performance in a much more efficient package.

I shoot both. IMHO if one is merely punching paper or smacking steel there is no point to using a Win Mag under 800 yrds. Shooting it at distances less than that (other than to confirm data) is a waste of a barrel.

Between the two get the .308 and enjoy the barrel life, cheaper brass, and 40% less powder consumption while being able to reach out.

The .308 is more than adequate for 1k, it's reasonable to reload and the barrel life is better.

I think .300wm is a phenomenal round for VLR shooting with the right load, but if I could only have one I probably stick with the .308, it's just too practical for the distances most folks will be slingng lead (up to and including 1000 yards).

Hmmm... you get 300WM <span style="font-style: italic">trajectory</span>. Downrange energy, not so much. That's a BIG part of performance.

Paper puncher's don't care. Individuals needing the extra punch certainly do.

That said, I'm looking hard at a .260 for my next build.

I don't disagree with you at all. I built a .300WM because I got the action cheap and I had three .308's. My next rifle will more than likely be .260.

It depends on if you have a 308 win already if you do then definitely go for the 300 win mag there's nothing like shooting a mag in terms of fun and getting the energy down range on steel.

I have a Remington PSS for my .308. And when I went custom I went with the .300WM. I wasn't going to dump several thousand dollars into a .308 when the PSS is generally fine for most shooting.

308 for barrel life. Not to mention cheaper to shoot down range and inb my local gun stores easier to fine ammo for the 308 than the 300 win.

+1 on .308.i'm not a huge fan of either(much,much better cartridges out there for long range shooting)but no way you can beat the practical use of the .308.cheap,accurate,ton of them out there,all kinds of data for loads,and heaven forbid SHTF,.308 ammo is every where.just a few reason i own one.

It's all good.

Shoot both, and build a .243 and a .260 too (and a 7mmRM).

The most important thing is to shoot.

Reckon I should also add that you can shoot .308 with less expense (300WM brass is more expensive, requires more powder, etc.).

So if you really like to shoot then the .308 or a smaller cartridge is the way to go.

For high BC bullets, the choices of .30, 7mm, and 6.5mm are hard to pass up.

Please, no comments from the multitude of 6mm lovers ---- I'm working with 115grDTACs right now.

Go .308. The 300 will wear out your shoulder if it is your only shooter. 308 now, then graduate later to a 300. I have both and shoot my 308 10x as often as the 300. easier to load for also

i failed to mention one very important fact. i already have ar10t AND "that one's for you pancho felipe" i shoot it alot already . its a stock ar10t. i will prob do some upgrades later to it , i think im with tha guy that said i will regret not getting the 300 later, im 90% sure im gonna get it in 300 so i will still have enough horsepower to cleanly take some whitetail out here after i get lock stock with it at extended range

A simple comparison of precision rifle cartridges purely by the 1k numbers...

This is commonly used bullets, all from 26" barrels compared in the same standard atmosphere.
There are perhaps better bullets and better performance to be had from any of these cartridges, but these are "common" loads without pushing the envelope.

I know I suggested .260 earlier, but given the choice between .308 and .300WM, I say go .308. Many have stated the obvious about barrel life but you should also consider the availability of accurate ammo for the .308. Even if you handload, the .308 will serve you better. Brass lasts longer, Lapua makes .308 brass, and it's hard to make one not shoot well.

Comfort and Cost *ARE* factors here.

For most purposes the 300WM is going to be ballistically superior to the 308 however, I personally refuse to make the switch.

It costs too much.

It bangs the hell out of my shoulder and after a little bit of shooting, it gets uncomfortable. Are there ways to compensate for that? Of course

I like the 308. A wide variety in Cartridges in 308 will be sold until im sprouting daisies.

300 Win and dont look back... I have both and shoot both, and if you want to shoot far with some punch, the 300 is the way to go. I love my 300's and if you brake them the recoil is VERY manageable. If you dont mind spending some extra money, you can go with a Carbon wrapped barrel (advanced barrel systems) and it WILL extend your barrel life. go with a 26-28" barrel and the Roedale Precision break and you will be able to handle the round with no problem and have 1 accurate rifle!

The question you have to ask yourself, what is the real end game? Paper an steel require just a hole or mark. 4 legs might require more punch, than either of those. Something that hunts back is different yet,.. then the last question, what are your bullet choices for all things being/needed shot. Answer those truthfully and you'll answer you own question.

If your going one bolt gun an not just gaming, the 30-06 will be hard to beat if you want to stay 30 cal. There are more bullet choices with a 30 cal, as well.
