Joe came to North Texas Rifle Precision requesting reloading instruction and hoped he could shoot a golf ball at 600 yards as he had seen in one of my previous videos. I told him no, he would shoot one at 750 yards. Joe laughed and said he would just be glad if he hit anything past 300 yards.

We got in position this morning and tested his loads. We found his load and zeroed his rifle to it. This took place in between passing rain which Joe does not care for. I would be safe in saying he hates it. However, he stuck with it and it turned into a gorgeous blue sky day.

After the load development I set up steel targets throughout the range. Joe got multiple first round hits on the steel all the way out to the 700 range (due to the rain we had to find a high dry spot which limited the distance to 700 yards) He didn’t think he was ready for the 700 yard golf ball shot. “No problem bro, wait here while I put the golf balls out anyway. You will hit it before we conclude this range session.”

He went through a 10 round AICS magazine and he was just barely missing. He asked me to do it and I hit both after a first round miss. Afterwards, I explained how much easier it is with a .260 and I had less work to do than him. We took a break and regrouped. Joe was previously shooting the left golf ball. He switched to the right one so I missed the first call. Then he nailed it! In the video I describe the golf ball as 1/8th MOA. I think I was dehydrated lol. It is closer to ¼ MOA target.

Watch the third shot and the golf ball shoots to the 9 o’clock position in front of the left tree. It isn’t as clear on YouTube but you can still make it out.

Re: .308 Win 700 yard Golf Ball Shot

Thanks man, I regularly do this with customers. Saturday morning and they have never reloaded or shot past 100 yards. By the next day they are shooting their own loads and hitting golf balls at distance. It really opens their eyes to what is possible and out there past 100 yards. Several of them are now making plans to go to RO now for more intense training. Joe suggested I have golf balls made with my logo that they can keep which is a kick-ass idea. I'm in the process of pricing that right now.

My suggestion is to take and use a screw eye and hang them, makes things a little more difficult. It takes a spotter and shooter to work together to make the corrections.

The purpose of the drill is to instill confidence in a first-time shooter.

180gr SMK. It was what he already had and wanted to shoot those before he ordered 175s.

Re: .308 Win 700 yard Golf Ball Shot

Guess I got knocked off. My 600 yard golfball is old news. I guess I need to go for 800 now that the range will allow for more than 600. Look out Joe, Im coming for you!!! Good shootin'. You need to come out with us Joe, get that rifle dirty. Come to the match in Crockett on May 28th -30th. You dont have to run and gun, we will have plenty of time for prone shooting. See the post in the competitions section for East Texas Target Shoot.

Re: .308 Win 700 yard Golf Ball Shot

We did a golf ball shoot at Thunder Valley 4 or 5 years ago. We shot golf balls at 1000 yards. It was a confidence builder for the shooters, myself included. The golf balls were suspended on 12# test fishing line. We had 8 or 9 shooters hooked at that point.

They were happy they could be so close or hit a 1.6" target at 1000 yards. We need to do that again.

I've found one that's fun to shoot is the Christmas tree glass type decorations, you can remove the clamp on the top and fill it with chalk powder or baby powder and makes for a good poof when the round hits it.

seriously? LOL, okay.

SW, the ornament thing sounds cool. I might try to find something comparable that will not litter the range.

oh Stacy, it isn't a challenge now that you have some experience!

When shooting clay pigeons we put a large plastic tarp under them. You can usually find them cheap. When done just pull the edges into the center and you good to go.

Re: .308 Win 700 yard Golf Ball Shot

People used to give us a hard time about shooting eggs at 600yds. They didn't think it was possible. It's good to see other people pushing the envelope. Golf balls at 700 would be tough. Nice shooting. Golf balls at 1,000 wow! We usually step up to pigeons at 1,000yds. Looks like i need to do more load developement

Re: .308 Win 700 yard Golf Ball Shot

bob - that is an idea to explore, thanks..

mule - these shots are not done with a perfect load found for their rifle. Due to time constraints, we do not have time to go back and load after the morning's field load development where we find the best load. Most classes are taken with a .308 and I can usually predetermine an adequate load for this exercise. Generally, I'll have them load "x" amount of rounds of the predetermined load to move into long range shooting after field load development is taught. Then they can go back and fine tune it once they know how. So, what I am saying is - you don't have to have a perfect load - just a functional and very consistent load. Body position is a huge factor. Again, these are first-time shooters doing this. It is not a difficult feat with an experienced long-range shooter. What sometimes takes many years of experimentation, they are accomplishing in 16 hours. It's a good time.
