308 Win with 1:9 twist

Any one running a 308 with a 1:9 twist? What kind of results are you getting? Will it still do OK with 175 SMK bullets? I'll be using a 24" barrel.

Thanks.
I don’t have a 1:9, but it would be more than fine with 175’s. And it would be impressive with 210-220gr bullets at supersonic speeds.

I have a 22" 9 twist and a 30" 8 twist LA.
Both are good with most any bullet 110 gr to 250 Atip...but the 250 is a bit heavy without throating the rifle and going long like 3.4" 30-06 LA ruining it for the shorter bullets.
The 200 gr SMK & up, even consider the 230 gr as the best bullet for LR.
With Trailboss powder one can run accurate subs with 175s.
I would run the new 177 gr over the 175 gr better BC and accurate.
For a light cheap varmint bullet the 130 gr
Speer Varmint is an accurate choice even in the 8 twist.

Thanks 45-90, haven't been keeping up with ballistic developments as much as I used to. I'll have to give the 177's a look and also some of the heavier bullets. Maybe the 185 Bergers? Have a few 220 SMK's somewhere too.

I snagged a 20" 1-9:.308 impact prefit off their website, it shoots very well from 100-600y, cannot tell any velocity or grouping difference from my 24" 1-10.
Was using 169smk, 177smk, 175botm, 175smk, 185jugs.

Don't forget the 200 gr SMK .715 G1 BC...single load in short action, this bullet will reach 2740 fps in a 22" 9 twist Bartlen 5 R barrel with Lapua LR brass and MR 2000 in case ya want to shoot way past 1000yds yds with your 308.
The heavier 208 Berger is good too at 2690 fps. Only tried a few Berger 215 but accuracy was better with 208 Berger in my rifle.
The 200.2 gr Berger is good too..
The 225 ELDM & 230 gr match bullets are accurate in the 9 twist around 2500 FPS in 22" barrel in a fairly light rifle with Remington Varmint contour.
Max 308 performance is with a long action 30" 8 twist, and hybrid cases...200 SMK .715 BC at 2900 fps alum chassis, 3.4" detachable mags... the 8 twist will shoot 130 gr to 250 gr Atips.
168 gr over 3200 fps with hybrid cases 30" barrel. I have 8 308s autos & bolts barrels from 16 to 30 inches, with twists 12, 11.25, 10, 9, & 8.
I prefer 9 and 8 twists with 200 gr to 230 gr bullets for shooting LR 1000yds and beyond in 308.
But shot 17,000 rds of 155 gr Lapua at 1000 to 1400 yds many yrs ago with 26" and 27" 12 twist Schilen select match barrels.
Still have one ready to go relatively new 12 twist Schilen 27" with 2 oz Jewell trigger ...old school, but if ya practice alot it works, but the new high BC 200 gr SMK is much better.

I’ve been using a 16in 1:8tw on my desert tech for a decade. Worked great. Had no issues with factory FGMM 175gr SMK to 1000yards.
My favourite hand load was 44gr varget and 175TMKs loaded at 2.88in - much better than the 175SMK in the 800-1000yards range when it’s cold. Was getting roughly 2525FPS.

Nothing wrong with a 1:9tw and if I was in the business of hand loading for a 308 for a 24-26in barrel I’d definitely look at the 200-215gr especially the Berger hybrids or the 208 eldm and load them at 2.945” with RL17 or Staball although ideally you’d want to run them at a long action length like 45-90 does.

Amazed at the fps with heavy bullets from a 308:) I didn't even realize hybrids were available for it.
The hybrid cases that are easily available are 6.8X 51 mm military cases pull downs like 50 cents each including primer and shipping....the best way to get them.
They are easy to make into 308...mandrel up to 30 cal, and lube and run through any commercial 308 die.
I neck turn into the shoulder and anneal...no trimming to length.
And you can even reuse the military primer, there is no primer crimp on the hybrid case.
I run 155 gr to 3100 fps in 22" 9 twist or 168 gr 2940 fps.
Some powders ya don't gain as much as others.
For the 16" fluted barrel AR 10 titanium bolt carrier carbon fiber handguard, and magnesium upper for a 6 lb 2oz AR 10 it shoots 5 shots 1/2 moa with 168 ELDM at 2756 fps, with Lake City brass...as an example. It now has a 10X Mark 5 M3 set up for 1200 yds on the turrent...to be confirmed.
For a light hunting AR no suppressor on this rifle 11.25 twist.
There is a 308 for just about every whim.
The alum chasis, LA,
30" heavy plama, 8 twist is 12 lbs 6 oz without the 4 lb scope.
So it depends on what you intend to do with your 308 build or factory rifle..how much weight and length fill your needs.
