Advanced Marksmanship .308win Trace @ 700yd Target

Shooters,

I have read posts where people wanted to see trace so my partner and I did this up.

I am shooting my DPMS LR-308 16" BBL with HSM 155grn factory ammunition on a 25" plate at 700yds. This was not a accuracy test by any means. Just a quick down ad dirty 13 rounds loaded in 3 mag's down range so you can see the trace of the bullet.

Saw the bullet trails of my fellow shooter one day, was pretty impressive, never imagined it would be so obvious and clearly visible.

I experienced the delay between firing and impact, has to be amazing to witness that on 700 yards.

Notice that the trace of this .308, at 700 yards, without regard to the hits would make it look like the bullets are impacting high. The longer the range, and the steeper the trajectory, the more the trace looks like it disappears above the target. This would prompt an inexperienced spotter to call the shots high when in fact they are hitting center.

Cool video John....have you ever observed the bullet going down range from the sun shining on it? I did once when the sun was low on the horizion, we were shooting 700 yards. Watched the bullet all the way to the steel, Alot of arc with a 175 gr Sierra out of a 308.

Having never seen it before I had that problem spotting for a long range class, especially when spotting from the side and same level as the shooter rather than behind him.

I could consistently see the round arc up and start back down and then lose it.

Never did get good at it, maybe next time.

Very nice. That was the first video I have seen with trace. On the other hand I have not looked for one either.

es sir I have seen the heal of the bullet "flash" as it goes down range.

What is even cooler than that is using F.L.I.R. system. The jacket gets so hot, you see the bullet from the word go until it stops.

Bullet trace is the bees knees for spotting long range hits/misses. You can't always see the impacts in the dirt.

My last outing, at 800 yards I had to pull back the zoom a touch on the spotting scope to see the trace since the bullet would arc out of the field of view.

It's really fun when you have a SUPER humid day, and your bullets leave a "smoke trail" as they go down range. It's rare to have a day humid enough and hot enough to get that, but it's fun when it happens.

I have yet to ever see bullet trace with the naked eye, i've only ever seen it through binos or spotting scopes. Anyone ever seen trace without an aid of some sort?

at 1000 yds with my 6.5-284 I have seen it a few times. It is a 65 lbs bench gun so I can put it where I want to then pick my head up off the gun and watch pretty cool.

The trick to trace is to (if you can arrange it) have the bright sun at your back shining towards the target just b4 it sunset or so. The trace shines like little specks of gold all the way to target impact, its quite the site to see.. I will try to catch it on film next outing. It may be a while as its cold asheck here for a while!.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately I didn't write it down but if I remember correctly I held for about 8 MPH but as you can see that was probably a bit much as most of the rounds were to one side of the bull.
