So, I was pondering what I could do with my souped up Remington 700 LA action when its time to change barrel again. Its on its second .300WM barrel and I while I really have nothing against 300WM, maybe its time to try something new?
I have been looking at 6.5 PRC ever since its introduction, but then again a 7mm Remington Magnum might be an easier choise? 300 PRC is naturally a given choise too.
Then along came the suggestion to make something new, bigger and maybe not better but atleast good enough.
Enter the 338-300 PRC. Which does sound like a good project. My friend ran the numbers in GRT (?) and it looked good too. Ill try to get him to post the graphs here soon.
If memory serves, it would get a 250 grain Scenar going at about 200 fps less than a .338 Lapua magnum, with a lot less powder.

The use would be to hit steel at long range (out to 1500 meters, maybe more), and the occational deer and hog hunt.

Is this a dumb idea, or one to entertain?

Honest question..,
Once had a .338-06,,,left in Alaska.
A good friends, bother wanted it bad.
So gave it as a gift.
Would a .338-300 PRC be a viable option?
Actually like my .338 WM over a .300WM

These are some GRT's calculations compairing known 338 LM data to 388-300 PRC:

Published data of 338 LM gives higher velocity in a much longer barrel and an even slower powder. And there is some insecurity regarding the calculation of cross section and other particularities. But on the whole...

As you can see the loads are in within margin of being very safe. I could get to published velocity for 338LM by increasing barrel length, change to an even slower powder and increase load to max pressure quite easily.

Then, there is reality. But I think this simulation is quite close.
